MONTROSE - A 41-year-old Montrose man was cited for numerous traffic offenses after his vehicle clipped a utility pole guywire Sunday evening resulting in a large-scale blackout.

Daniel Welby has been cited by the Colorado State Patrol for driving under the influence per se, driving under the influence, careless driving and driving under revocation in connection with the 6:40 p.m. crash at the intersection of 67.25 Road and Sunshine Road near Montrose.

Welby was traveling southbound on 67.25 Road in a 1998 Oldsmobile when he failed to negotiate a left hand curve, causing the vehicle to go off the right side of the road, said CSP Trooper Jody Fugate.

The car then plowed through a fence and struck a guy wire, which snapped off the top of a utility pole, said Fugate.

The accident resulted in a power outage for 3,076 Delta-Montrose Electric Association customers. Some customers were without electricity for about 6 1/2 hours.

Welby was not injured in the crash but his vehicle was totaled. Law officers found him hiding in a ditch near the accident site, Fugate said.

" My dad was Robert Heichel and i just wanted to thank again everyone that helped looked for him. It was over 3 years ago that he died, but i will never forget him. I think about him still every single day and life without him is so hard. Thank you everyone who spent time looking for him. I wish this could have been a happy ending but life isn't fair. My dad died when i was 12 and i am now almost 16. Thank you again for everything you guys have done. Your amazing. "

" It really makes me sick that people lie about certain events to make themselves look better than they really are... Just to set the record straight, one of those stories is extremely false. Email me if you want the real story from the person who was actually there. "
