MONTROSE — Talk with a lawyer free will be on Thursday, April 13 and the second Thursday of each month, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Montrose County Courthouse (1200 North Grand, the Justice Center) and Delta County Courthouse (501 Palmer). Low income residents who need answers to civil legal questions can talk with a lawyer free. Clients will first be screened to see if they qualify for these services. A volunteer lawyer will then be available for brief consultation on divorce/custody/child support, landlord/tenant problems, debt/consumer problems, etc. The lawyer cannot discuss traffic or criminal issues. MONTROSE — The community Easter "Sonrise" Service will be held Sunday, April 16 on the south lawn of the Montrose Pavilion. Pickin' at the Pavilion

A love offering will be taken; the Association of Montrose Churches (AMC) will usher this event. The offerings will help support the Rent and Utilities Fund and the Transient Fund of the AMC. Chipeta Memorial Walk
MONTROSE — The Ute Indian Museum will celebrate the third annual Chipeta Memorial Walk at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29. The three-mile walk will begin at Baldridge Park and conclude at the Ute Indian Museum. There will be an unveiling of a 22 X 4 foot Ute mural by Jay Dilorezo from the Colorado Historical Society. Mural images represent the Northern Utes, Southern Utes and the Ute Mountain Utes. Special guests Vickie Krudwig, author of "Searching for Chipeta," and Roland McCook, Uncompahgre Ute, will share the history of Chipeta's life.There will also be Indian vendors and frybread. MONTROSE — The third annual "Run for Shelter" cross-country 5k run/walk will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 29. The event benefits Tri-County Resource Center, helping local victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Benefit for student with cancer
MONTROSE — A benefit dinner and silent auction will be held Sunday, April 30 at the Montrose High School Cafeteria for Kara O'Brien. The silent auction will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Entertainment will also be provided. Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for children under age 10. Kara is a MHS freshman who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer this past November. She is undergoing treatment for her cancer in Denver and Grand Junction. Meals on Wheels volunteers needed
MONTROSE — Volunteer drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels Program in the Montrose area. There are between 80 to 85 meals delivered to the homebound Monday through Friday from the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center, on six different routes. The meals are picked up at 11 a.m. at the senior center. Each route takes from 45 minutes to one hour to deliver. Volunteers usually sign up for one week at a time. Search for Mrs. Montrose 2006
MONTROSE — The search is on for the new Mrs. Montrose. Once selected, the community representative will then advance on to compete in the Mrs. Colorado-America Pageant to be held May 20 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver. City and county titleholders will compete to win over $10,000 in prizes, one of which includes an all-expense paid trip to the nationally televised Mrs. America Pageant. Interested applicants must live or work in the Montrose area, be married during the time of competition, be a resident of the state for at least six months, be a U.S. citizen and be at least 18 years old. There is no age limit or performing talent. Beauty is a key element in the competition, but contestants are also urged to voice their opinions on marriage and important issues of the day. Seedling tree program
MONTROSE — Seedling trees are available to order through the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and Colorado State Forest Service Conservation Tree Program. To qualify, participants must own at least two acres of land, and the trees must be planted for the purpose of creating windbreaks, wildlife habitat, erosion control, reforestation, visual screens, noise barriers or Christmas trees. They may not be used for ornamental or landscaping plantings or sold as live trees. The trees will be delivered in early May to locations in Delta, Montrose and Grand Junction. Task force targets pedestrian safety
MONTROSE — The Traffic Issues Task Force, a group commissioned by the City of Montrose to examine current and future issues within the city, has targeted pedestrian safety as one of its top priorities. An educational pamphlet containing “rules of the road” and safety tips for pedestrians and motorists has been prepared for distribution to the public. The Montrose Police Department and Montrose Fire Protection District personnel will be working cooperatively to distribute the pamphlet to pedestrians and motorists on the street. Free lunch
MONTROSE — Christ’s Kitchen, an ecumenical ministry serving the community of Montrose, will begin serving a lunch of soup and bread every Friday and Monday beginning Friday, Sept. 2. The serving location will be at the MADA building at North 6th and Grand Ave. Serving hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome, and there is no charge. Habitat needs volunteers
MONTROSE — Volunteers, individuals and groups, are needed by Habitat for Humanity for Montrose County to continue construction projects on two homes in the Mesa Vista subdivision off Locust Road. Habitat is a non-profit, ecumenical organization that builds houses, at no profit and no mortgage interest, with qualifying families.
Immediate needs are for fence builders, roof shinglers, framers, and vinyl siders. Shortly, drywall finishers will be needed. Materials are furnished. Construction supervisor on site will teach necessary skills. Contact 240-6171 to volunteer.

Fire district needs to see numbers
MONTROSE — The Montrose Fire Protection District is asking all area residents to display their street numbers clearly on the front of their homes. Homes without street numbers displayed are difficult for fire, EMS, and police services to locate, especially at night. MONTROSE — Holistic Health Resources of the San Juans announces an Alternative Care Assistance Grant for children ages birth to 18 in Montrose and San Miguel Counties. MONTROSE — Montrose County Health and Human Services is now offering a Well Child Program to the community. The program will provide the following services for children, from 0-19 years: sports physicals, camp physicals, daycare physicals and school physicals. Fees are based on a sliding fee schedule. DAV looking for volunteer drivers
MONTROSE — The local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter is seeking volunteers to act as drivers to transport Veterans Administration (VA) patients from the Montrose area to the VA clinic in Montrose and the VA hospital in Grand Junction. The local DAV chapter will receive a new seven-passenger van for this purpose, and the volunteers would each drive about one day each month. Therapeutic massage
MONTROSE — The Montrose Recreation District is offering Therapeutic Massage Sessions for adults 50 and above on the first Thursday of each month. Volunteers needed
MONTROSE — Drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels Program in the Montrose area. More than 90 meals per day are now being delivered to the homebound Monday through Friday. There are currently five routes. The meals are picked up at 11 a.m. at the Montrose Senior Center, and it takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour to deliver.
