Alicia George chimed in with an update about the ‘Step Up to Tee Up’ golf tournament scheduled Aug. 19 at The Links at Cobble Creek.

Proceeds will benefit the San Juan Healthcare Foundation/San Juan Cancer Center. In particular, the tournament will raise monies to build a garden area on the second floor, so chemotherapy patients, while they are being infused, can sit outside and enjoy the salubrious Montrose weather.

The tournament is being sponsored by the Cobble Creek Women’s Golf Association.

Alicia tells me how Flower Motor Co., is offering a hole-in-one prize — a new Subaru, on one hole; and on the other par-3 holes, how Montrose County Abstract Co. is offering vacation packages. All for just hitting a ball into a hole.

  • I see by the paper…..

Bill Hellman, Delta area auto whiz, is featured in the Aug. 7 edition of Time magazine. Toyota, as part of its ‘Moving Forward’ campaign, salutes Hellman Toyota for the 11th year. Hellman received the president’s award, reflecting dealership excellence.

Elementary school students in Delta receive personalized books about themselves — ‘I Like Me.’ The book program reinforces self-esteem and respect for classroom peers. More than 200 were distributed last year, by Hellman. Hence, the national recognition.

Pictured in Time magazine are: Kendra Hillman, Bill Hellman, Jr., K.C. Carlson, Jim Farmer, Stacey Campbell, Larry Bellmire, R. Matt Hellman.

  • Daily Press tidings…..

  • 1. Our 2006 Pigskin Preview, featuring features, photos and season outlook stories for Montrose, Olathe and Delta High Schools is coming Sunday, Aug. 20.

  • 2. Last Friday, we started a new section, ‘Our Community,’ feature photos from readers. It looked great, credit managing editor Bill Swaim. If you would like to submit photos from various community events, your travels, or something you consider newsworthy:

    — Identify the people in the photo, left to right. First names and last names.

    — Identify the event, and include a remark or two of what’s happening in the photo. Include the date; a more timely photo has a better shot of getting published.

    — Send photos electronically to: editor@montrosepress.com.

    — Rules: No political photos. No business-type photos where someone is trying to sell something.

  • 3. Afternoon, or morning. Just a one question. Let us know. There’s a survey into tomorrow’s Daily Press, for home delivery subscribers.

    Thank you.

  • Dept. of incidental (sports) info…..

  • J.B. Holmes is a professional on the PGA Tour, which stops in Castle Pines, Colo., this week for The International. Holmes is a big hitter, almost 60 percent of his tee shots going 300 yards or more, number one on tour in this statistic.

But what’s interesting is that Holmes, who was christened John when he was born, has legally changed his name to J.B. because of all the references to the former porn star with the same name.

  • Roy Gleason is the only former major league baseball player to win a Purple Heart. He played briefly with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1963, before being sent back down to the minor leagues and eventually being drafted into the Army. He served in Vietnam in 1968 and received a mortar wound in combat.

What’s also noteworthy is that Gleason, 63, has a career batting average of a perfect 1.000 while with the Dodgers. He came to bat once, and hit a double.

  • Live! From New Orleans!

The Henry Butler Band will entertain us, come Friday night, at the Montrose Pavilion. Donny Morales and his blues band will open.

Tix: Blue Sky Music/Books. Info: 252-9526

The show will benefit the Montrose Arts Council.
