    Flu shot clinics

    MONTROSE — Montrose County Health Services will hold its annual flu vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25. The clinic will be a drive through clinic in Baldridge (Riverbottom) Park. Registration, payment and the actual shot will all be given to the person while he or she is in the car.     Flu vaccination

    DELTA — Delta County Health and Human Services is offering a flu vaccination clinic at Heritage Hall in Hotchkiss at the Delta County Fairgrounds Saturday, Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to noon. Fee is $20. After 10 a.m., the department will reduce the cash price of the vaccine to $18 to help stagger the number of vaccines given. For more information, call 874-2165.

    Free children’s ID program

    OLATHE — The Olathe Masonic Lodge is sponsoring a free children’s identification program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the American Legion Hall on Highway 348 in Olathe.     Graffiti volunteer coordinator needed

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Graffiti Task Force is looking for a volunteer coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating all logistical aspects of having graffiti removed once it has been reported to the police. Estimated time commitment is eight to 10 hours per week. This is strictly a volunteer position; no financial compensation is provided.     Del-Rose Chorus annual show

    MONTROSE — The Del-Rose Chorus of Sweet Adelines International will present its annual show, “A Stroll in the Park,” on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Performing Arts Center located in the Delta Middle School and on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Montrose Pavilion.     Telluride Mountainfilm

    MONTROSE — On Thursday, Nov. 9, Mountainfilm on Tour comes to Montrose at the pavilion as a benefit for two local non-profit organizations, Uncompahgre Valley Association and Community Options, Inc. No tickets are needed, but donations are appreciated. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 6:30 p.m.

    Altrusa’s holiday festival/gifts

    Fire Prevention Week

    MONTROSE — Oct. 8 through Oct. 14 is Fire Prevention Week. The Montrose Fire Protection District will have an open house Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be activities for the kids, and informational fire safety tips given by the firefighters and EMTs.     Region 10 Hearing Aid Bank

    MONTROSE — The Region 10 Hearing Aid Bank provides donated hearing aids to individuals who need them. The Hearing Aid Bank serves those in Montrose, San Miguel, Hinsdale, Delta, Gunnison and Ouray counties. Those who have hearing aids that are no longer needed can donate them to the Region 10 Hearing Aid Bank in return for a tax deduction.     Grants available

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Community Foundation announces the yearly grant cycle for 2007. These grants are open to non-profit organizations. The grant should benefit the entire community, last a number of years and benefit a large number of individuals. Emphasis will be given to youth projects, but grants are not limited to youth.     Girl Scouts fund-raiser

    Crisis-line volunteer training

    MONTROSE — Hilltop’s Tri-County Resource Center is offering free crisis-line volunteer training. Forty (40) hours of volunteer training must be completed to become a resource center volunteer in any capacity. In addition to the need for crisis-line volunteers, the organization is looking for volunteer assistance with clerical duties, children’s groups and community event projects.     Townsend median improvement project

    MONTROSE — The city has started work on four Townsend medians lasting approximately six weeks. Two medians will be under construction at any given time. Work will occur between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., during which time the highway may be reduced to a single lane in each direction. For questions regarding this project, call 240-1497.

    Emergency farm loans available

    MONTROSE — Producers in Delta, Gunnison and Montrose Counties could be eligible for emergency loans based on damages and losses caused by drought that occurred from Jan. 1, 2006 and continuing. The low interest loans are available to operators of family size farms/ranches who are unable to obtain credit elsewhere.     Fire hydrant testing and flushing

    MONTROSE — During September and October, city utility crews will begin a new phase of fire hydrant testing in conjunction with flushing dirt and rust accumulation from water mains. Water pressure and flow will be checked at all fire hydrants. Homeowners in the proximity of testing activities can expect to see a temporary discoloration of their water.     Family education/support meetings

    MONTROSE — Midwestern Colorado Mental Health Center is providing Family Education and Support meetings regarding addictions and recovery issues. Meetings are held every Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the mental health center, 605 E. Miami. There is no fee for the meetings, and they are open to the public.     Compost bins available

    MONTROSE — As part of their ongoing efforts to promote recycling, the Environmental Committee of the Montrose Altrusa Club, along with the City of Montrose Recycle Task Force, is selling expandable compost bins for $20 each. The bins are made from heavy black plastic, with air holes in the sides, and are expandable and portable. They are available at city hall and are also being sold at Farmers Market on Saturdays.     Tucker rehab fund

    MONTROSE — The friends of Doug Tucker, who was injured in an automobile accident near Olathe April 28, have established a fund to help defray medical expenses. Tucker was critically injured in the accident. He is recovering, but needs extensive rehabilitation, and insurance will not cover all the costs. His friends are asking for contributions, no matter how small, to be made to local Bank of the West branches, payable to: Doug Tucker Rehab Fund.     New policy from state Dept. of Revenue

    MONTROSE — Effective July 1, 2006 Montrose County Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be implementing a new policy from the Colorado State Department of Revenue. This policy requires all motor vehicle transactions to be accompanied by any form of secure and verifiable identification. The following is a list of transactions that will require your identification:

  • New titles

  • Duplicate titles

  • New registrations

  • New temporary registration permits

  • New placards

    Also when someone other than a named owner chooses to complete a transaction for the named owner, the named owner will be required to provide a non-secure power of attorney naming the agent. All dealers are required to include a readable photocopy of the SVI to complete title transactions.     Volunteer board members sought

    MONTROSE — Voices for Children, a non-profit agency that provides volunteer advocates for abused children in the court system, has openings on its board of directors.     Migrant Seasonal Head Start

    OLATHE — The Migrant Seasonal Head Start, an early childhood development program, is now providing services for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of migrant families that are working in agriculture.     Green waste drop off

    MONTROSE — The new City of Montrose Green Waste Drop Off Center is now open. City residents can use the center, free of charge, Monday through Friday, 3 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center is located on the southwest corner of North Park and San Juan Avenues and will operate through Oct. 15. An attendant will be available during all hours of operation to assist those dropping off green waste and to ensure that only the proper materials are left at the site.     Meals on Wheels volunteers needed

    MONTROSE — Volunteer drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels Program in the Montrose area. There are between 80 to 85 meals delivered to the homebound Monday through Friday from the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center, on six different routes. The meals are picked up at 11 a.m. at the senior center. Each route takes from 45 minutes to one hour to deliver. Volunteers usually sign up for one week at a time.     MONTROSE — The Colorado Quitline, a free telephone service that helps callers quit smoking and using tobacco, has announced that it is now offering free nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches to anyone who enrolls in the cessation program.     Sons of American Legion

    Task force targets pedestrian safety

    MONTROSE — The Traffic Issues Task Force, a group commissioned by the City of Montrose to examine current and future issues within the city, has targeted pedestrian safety as one of its top priorities. An educational pamphlet containing “rules of the road” and safety tips for pedestrians and motorists has been prepared for distribution to the public. The Montrose Police Department and Montrose Fire Protection District personnel will be working cooperatively to distribute the pamphlet to pedestrians and motorists on the street.     Habitat needs volunteers

    MONTROSE — Volunteers, individuals and groups, are needed by Habitat for Humanity for Montrose County to continue construction projects on two homes in the Mesa Vista subdivision off Locust Road.     Fire district needs to see numbers

    DAV looking for volunteer drivers

The local DAV chapter will receive a new seven-passenger van for this purpose, and the volunteers would each drive about one day each month.
