MONTROSE -- While local high school football teams prepare for the postseason, some of the future stars battled it out on the gridiron at Montrose High School football field Saturday afternoon.

The Montrose Titans pounded the ball up the field early and often as they routed the Hotchkiss Steelers, 43-0 in the 2006 Montrose Youth Football League Super Bowl.

"It's good experience for the kids to play at Montrose High School," said the MYFL's league commissioner Bill Duffle. "It means a lot more to them than if they were playing in a dirt-ridden back alley."

The MYFL is made up of 14 teams, seven from Montrose County and seven from Delta. After all of the teams face each other, the winner advances to the MYFL Super Bowl, last season the Olathe 49ers were crowned champions.

MYFL has been a feeder program for many local high schools, with almost 90 percent of high school football players journeying through the program Duffle said.

"It definitely is an important program for these local high school teams," Duffle said. "Most of the kids came up through (MYFL). Seth Palmer, Quentin Haynes, Kirk English and Jeremy Jones all came up through the league."

Saturday was a chance for many future stars to shine. The Titans offense, led by quarterback Drew Casebier and a strong running game with Angelo Youngren, Wyatte Thaute and Kendall Browning made their way with ease down the field.

Youngren scored on a long touchdown run in the first half. Thaute caught a pass in the end zone and then in the second half he found Browning for another touchdown.

A big part of the reason the MYFL has been successful is the help it has received from local high schools that have helped out at the Youth Football Summer Camp.

"It means a lot for these kids to see the Montrose football staff on the sidelines at the game and to have them help out with the camp," Duffle said.
