    Walk-in flu clinic

    MONTROSE — Montrose County Health and Human Services will have a walk-in flu clinic on Friday, Dec. 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointments are needed. Adults only, no children. Cost is $25 or will bill Medicare, Medicaid or RMHP. For more information, call 252-5000.

    ‘Babes in Toyland’

    RIDGWAY — Circle of Joy presents the children’s Christmas musical, “Babes in Toyland,” adapted from the classic Disney movie of the same name, at the Sherbino Theater in downtown Ridgway. Performance times are at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16 and 1:30 p.m. Dec. 17. The cast of 15 children, ages 3 through 12, performs under the direction of Shannon McCarthy Maros.

    Olathe flu vaccine clinic

    OLATHE — Montrose County Health and Human Services will administer flu vaccine injections from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13 at the American Legion Post No. 24 in Olathe.     Help animals at shelter

    MONTROSE — The public is invited to participate in the holiday treat program to benefit the animals at the Montrose Animal Shelter. Select a treat for your cat or dog, take a copy of the shelter’s “Wish List” and bring back a gift for the shelter animals.     Christmas lighting contest

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Association of Realtors is sponsoring the annual Christmas Lighting Contest. To nominate a home, call Kylee at 275-8357. Nominations must be in by Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. All nominees will be announced in the paper on Dec. 24. Five winners will be chosen, and each will receive $100 in MAMA Bucks.     Used cell phone drive

    MONTROSE — The Montrose High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is collecting old cell phones. The phones will be sold, and the proceeds will be donated to the San Juan Cancer Center. Drop off used cell phones at the Montrose High School Main Office or Room 126 between Dec. 4 and 15.

    Free ice climbing classes

    Trail riders to meet

    MONTROSE — Uncompahgre Valley Trail Riders will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13 in the Montrose Library conference room. It will be a potluck, with club furnishing table service and beverages. Each person needs to bring a gift for exchange. For more information, call 249-5090.

    Business women’s meeting

    MONTROSE — The American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) will hold its monthly dinner meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13 at the chamber of commerce building. The speaker will be Bobbi Brown, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Branch Manager, discussing the topic of goal setting.

    Music at Noon series

    MONTROSE — The Montrose United Methodist Church is hosting the annual “Music at Noon” series. The concerts start at noon and last approximately 30 minutes. The audience is encouraged to bring a sack lunch. The concerts are held in the church’s sanctuary at 19 S. Park Ave. Admission is free.

    Holiday music in Montrose and Delta

    MONTROSE — The Sweet Adelines and Black Canyon Barbershop Chorus will present a combined program of holiday music. On Thursday, Dec. 14, the program will be at 7 p.m. at the Montrose United Methodist Church. On Sunday, Dec. 17, the program will be presented at 3 p.m. at the Delta Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

    Mac User Group to meet

    MONTROSE — The Black Canyon Macintosh User Group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14 at Montrose High School, room 105. This month’s program will be a re-cap of the basics of digital image manipulation. All interested persons are invited to attend.

    Citizens Police Academy

    The Montrose Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy returns for its 10th year in January.

    Interested citizens can pick up an application at the department on South First Street and must return it by Jan. 5 to be considered. The course begins Jan. 22.

    The nine-week course will be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the department. Topics covered include history of the police department, traffic contacts, criminal investigations, community-oriented policing, traffic laws, pursuit driving, support staff, records, clerical, school resource officers, the hiring process, internal affairs, Special Response Unit (formerly SWAT), firearms at the range, officer survival, patrol procedures, animal services and victims advocacy.

  • Thursday, Dec. 21: Monument Canyon Trail, Colorado Nat’l Monument. Carpool from city lot, bring lunch.

    Christmas square dance

    Girl Scouts host Christmas event

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Girl Scout group will be hosting “Be an Elf for a Day” event for girls ages 5 to 17 on Saturday, Dec. 16. The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at The Homestead in Montrose. Parents are invited to drop off their daughters while they do their holiday shopping. Activities for the girls will include holiday games, crafts and learning how other cultures celebrate the holidays. Admission is $2 plus a can of food or $3.     Crimestoppers fund-raiser

    MONTROSE — Montrose Crimestoppers is hosting a fund-raiser, “Funny Magic Holiday,” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17 at the Montrose Pavilion. The show will feature award-winning magician, Keir Royale. Montrose Area Crimestoppers are made up of local volunteers committed to fighting crime by increasing public awareness, recovering stolen property and narcotics and offering financial rewards.     Love Light Wreath

    MONTROSE — “The Love Light Wreath” is currently on display at Montrose Memorial Hospital. It will be displayed through Dec. 30. Persons wishing to remember a friend or loved one may sponsor a light on the wreath with a $5 donation. The names of those being remembered or honored are displayed beside the wreath.     MONTROSE — The Montrose Altrusa Club will sponsor an electronics recycling day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Montrose City Shop. E-waste includes computer monitors, keyboards, CPU’s, cell phones, television and any digital appliances. Because of the expense to recycle electronics, there will be a fee per item.     Mitten tree fund drive

    MONTROSE — Canyon Chiropractic Wellness Center in Montrose is hosting its annual “Mitten Tree” to benefit Montrose area young children in need of hats, mittens and gloves. The public is invited to drop off new or used (in good condition) hats, mittens, gloves, scarves or other warm accessories at the center, located across from Wal-Mart, during regular office hours.     Winter homeless count

    MONTROSE — Montrose County is currently making preparations for the Winter Colorado Statewide Homeless Count. Needed are Homeless Count sites, volunteers from agencies and interested individuals, as well as a meeting room to hold agency and volunteer training.     Giving Tree program

    MONTROSE — The Montrose County Department of Health and Human Services, with the support of a women’s group from the First Presbyterian Church, is sponsoring the “Giving Tree Program” for area children in need. Giving Trees will be decorated with ornaments that contain a child’s name and age and can be found at Wal-Mart, Hastings, The Dollar Store, Montrose County Federal Credit Union, First Presbyterian Church, Nana’s Restaurant, Montrose Bank South and Travelin’ Tots.     MONTROSE — A benefit account has been set up at Montrose Bank for Brett and Nichole Carlson and family of Montrose. Brett will be undergoing chemotherapy for the next six to seven months for liver problems and will be unable to work. The couple is also expecting their second child soon.     Region 10 Hearing Aid Bank

    MONTROSE — The Region 10 Hearing Aid Bank provides donated hearing aids to individuals who need them. The Hearing Aid Bank serves those in Montrose, San Miguel, Hinsdale, Delta, Gunnison and Ouray counties. Those who have hearing aids that are no longer needed can donate them to the Region 10 Hearing Aid Bank in return for a tax deduction.     Grants available

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Community Foundation announces the yearly grant cycle for 2007. These grants are open to non-profit organizations. The grant should benefit the entire community, last a number of years and benefit a large number of individuals. Emphasis will be given to youth projects, but grants are not limited to youth.     Emergency farm loans available

    MONTROSE — Producers in Delta, Gunnison and Montrose Counties could be eligible for emergency loans based on damages and losses caused by drought that occurred from Jan. 1, 2006 and continuing. The low interest loans are available to operators of family size farms/ranches who are unable to obtain credit elsewhere.     Family education/support meetings

    MONTROSE — Midwestern Colorado Mental Health Center is providing Family Education and Support meetings regarding addictions and recovery issues. Meetings are held every Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the mental health center, 605 E. Miami. There is no fee for the meetings, and they are open to the public.     Compost bins available

    MONTROSE — As part of their ongoing efforts to promote recycling, the Environmental Committee of the Montrose Altrusa Club, along with the City of Montrose Recycle Task Force, is selling expandable compost bins for $20 each. The bins are made from heavy black plastic, with air holes in the sides, and are expandable and portable. They are available at city hall and are also being sold at Farmers Market on Saturdays.     New policy from state Dept. of Revenue

    MONTROSE — Effective July 1, 2006 Montrose County Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be implementing a new policy from the Colorado State Department of Revenue. This policy requires all motor vehicle transactions to be accompanied by any form of secure and verifiable identification. The following is a list of transactions that will require your identification:

  • New titles

  • Duplicate titles

  • New registrations

  • New temporary registration permits

  • New placards

    Also when someone other than a named owner chooses to complete a transaction for the named owner, the named owner will be required to provide a non-secure power of attorney naming the agent. All dealers are required to include a readable photocopy of the SVI to complete title transactions.     Volunteer board members sought

    MONTROSE — Voices for Children, a non-profit agency that provides volunteer advocates for abused children in the court system, has openings on its board of directors. The board is seeking individuals from the business, education, law enforcement and general communities of Delta, Montrose, Ouray and Gunnison counties who have an interest in children. Board members typically spend an average of four to six hours per month.     Migrant Seasonal Head Start

    OLATHE — The Migrant Seasonal Head Start, an early childhood development program, is now providing services for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of migrant families that are working in agriculture. Services are free to qualifying families, and children with disabilities are welcome to the program. Applications will continue to be accepted throughout the agricultural season.     Meals on Wheels volunteers needed

    MONTROSE — Volunteer drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels Program in the Montrose area. There are between 80 to 85 meals delivered to the homebound Monday through Friday from the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center, on six different routes. The meals are picked up at 11 a.m. at the senior center. Each route takes from 45 minutes to one hour to deliver. Volunteers usually sign up for one week at a time.     Quit smoking program

    MONTROSE — The Colorado Quitline, a free telephone service that helps callers quit smoking and using tobacco, has announced that it is now offering free nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches to anyone who enrolls in the cessation program. Anyone wanting to quit and take advantage of this free ongoing offer should call the Colorado Quitline (1-800-639-QUIT). This service is available in English and Spanish, seven days a week.     Health care for women

    MONTROSE — Raising a family requires stamina, patience, understanding, love and good health. It is important for all women to have access to health care specific to their health needs. The Montrose County Department of Health & Human Services provides health care services that are important to the health of women.     Sons of American Legion

    MONTROSE — Montrose American Legion Post 73 has received inquiries and interest about starting a Sons of the American Legion Squadron in Montrose. All male descendants, adopted sons and stepsons of members of the American Legion and descendants of veterans who died in service during WWI, WWII, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama and the Persian Gulf War are eligible for membership in the S.A.L.     Task force targets pedestrian safety

    MONTROSE — The Traffic Issues Task Force, a group commissioned by the City of Montrose to examine current and future issues within the city, has targeted pedestrian safety as one of its top priorities. An educational pamphlet containing “rules of the road” and safety tips for pedestrians and motorists has been prepared for distribution to the public. The Montrose Police Department and Montrose Fire Protection District personnel will be working cooperatively to distribute the pamphlet to pedestrians and motorists on the street.     Suicide support group

    MONTROSE — The Heartbeat Support Group assists people who have experienced loss through suicide. The group meets the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church. For more information, call Vivian at 240-0827.

    Family planning clinic update

    OLATHE — Starting in September, the Family Planning Clinic of Montrose County Department of Health and Human Services will be holding a clinic one Wednesday a month at their Olathe Clinic site.     Habitat needs volunteers

    MONTROSE — Volunteers, individuals and groups, are needed by Habitat for Humanity for Montrose County to continue construction projects on two homes in the Mesa Vista subdivision off Locust Road. Habitat is a non-profit, ecumenical organization that builds houses, at no profit and no mortgage interest, with qualifying families.

    Fire district needs to see numbers

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Fire Protection District is asking all area residents to display their street numbers clearly on the front of their homes. Homes without street numbers displayed are difficult for fire, EMS, and police services to locate, especially at night.     DAV looking for volunteer drivers

    MONTROSE — The local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter is seeking volunteers to act as drivers to transport Veterans Administration (VA) patients from the Montrose area to the VA clinic in Montrose and the VA hospital in Grand Junction. The local DAV chapter will receive a new seven-passenger van for this purpose, and the volunteers would each drive about one day each month.
