Since only the top four wrestlers qualify for state, Gallegos got to wrestle-back the fourth-place finisher, Palisade’s Alex Hayworth, to determine a true-fourth.
Their wrestle-back was tied at two going in the third period, then Gallegos head locked Hayworth for a five-point move.
Later, Gallegos took him down again with a single leg to earn a trip to state with a 9-5 victory.
Gallegos will be joined at the Pepsi Center next week by his teammate’s Cutter Garrison, who won the region at 103 pounds, Clint Richardson (112), Sam Snyder (140), Michael Dickinson (152), Adrian Gallegos (160) and possibly Brandon Franklin at 215 pounds.
Franklin’s wrestle-back against Moffat County’s Josh Sadderwhite ended unfortunately.
Sadderwhite picked up Franklin, who had been weighing-in in the low 170’s, and slammed him down to the mat.
After the slam, Franklin had a concussion and had to go to the hospital.
The good news for MHS is Franklin was able to walk off the mat under his own power and won the match by disqualification.
At press time, Montrose’s coaches were waiting to hear from the doctors to know whether or not Franklin could wrestle next week.
In the team hunt, Moffat County finished first with 217 points, followed by Palisade (203), Rifle (189), Montrose (155.5) and Montezuma-Cortez.
The Indians were hoping to qualify seven wrestlers and place in the top-three as a team, but didn’t seem too disappointed to barely miss the goal.
“It’s unbelievable from where we started at the first of the year,” Montrose High’s head coach Jack Garrison said.
“I’m thrilled for the kids. We didn’t quite reach our goal, but we came dang close. I’m real pleased”
Other MHS placers include Matt Dickinson (119) and Cade Garrison (135) who both finished sixth.
Syrus DeJong also placed fifth for MHS at 189 pounds, but the senior won’t get another chance to wrestle at the state championships.
Moffat County and Palisade each had eight qualifiers and Montezuma-Cortez had four.
For Delta, Ty Tatman won the 145-pound championship. He’ll be joined at state by teammate Luke Laurita (152).
The state wrestling tournament begins Thursday, last season the Indians finished eighth.
Adrian Gallegos is making his second trip to state.
Cutter Garrison, who is currenty ranked second at 103-pounds where he finished third last season at state.
