MONTROSE — An early morning fire claimed the life of at least one goat Friday.

A passerby was credited with alerting the property owner to his burning pole barn at 16311 62.50 Road and calling in the incident.

The Montrose Fire Protection District had the blaze, which broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m., under control in about an hour, Deputy Chief Dale Erickson said, but were unable to save the structure, which was fully involved upon crews' arrival.

The property owner told investigators he kept 50 goats in the barn and had last been inside at midnight.

When he left the barn, he left the lights on where the goats were kept. That area sustained the most damage, a report said.

"We didn't find any (goats) inside," Erickson said, adding that all but one of the animals escaped.

The fire district estimated losses to be at $160,000 — $100,000 for the building, $10,000 for vehicles and $50,000 in contents.
