Delta Montrose Basketball Officials Association scholarship

MONTROSE — The Delta Montrose Basketball Officials Association announces a new scholarship created for the purpose of promoting the further education of graduates of school in their area who participated in high school basketball. The scholarships are intended for one boy and one girl who exemplify good moral character, good sportsmanship and fair play on and off the court, have above average scholarship and contribute to extra curricular activities. Application are available at the guidance offices of Crested Butte, Gunnison, Paonia, Delta, Olathe, Montrose, Ridgway, Ouray, Telluride and Norwood. Deadline is May 1.

ElderAdo Scholarship available

MONTROSE — Jim and Janet Elder are pleased to announce the availability of the ElderAdo Scholarship for 2007. This scholarship has been created as a way to reward students pursing a business-related degree who have been self-starters and hardworking at Montrose High School and within the community, focusing on community service, high school involvement and academic achievement. MHS 2007 graduates who will attend an in-state or out-of-state school and pursue a business or business-related program are eligible. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, a resume and essay. Applications may be picked up at the MHS Guidance Office or at ElderAdo Financial at 1100 S. Townsend Ave. in Montrose.

Boys and Girls club presentation

MONTROSE — In celebration of the Black Canyon Boys & Girls Club and its investors, the public is invited to attend a social hour with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. The night will feature “The Power of One,” a free presentation by motivational speaker Dave Condon on Thursday, March 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the clubhouse at the Bridges Golf Course in Montrose.

Scholarship available to seniors

MONTROSE — San Juan Coloradans for Nebraska is offering high school seniors in Montrose or Ouray counties an opportunity to apply for a scholarship for a school of their choice. Applicants must show good citizenship and service to the community. Application deadline is March 31 and students can apply by printing out an application at www.sjcn4ne.com.

Student art display at library

MONTROSE — An art display by the students of Spring Creek Adventist Elementary School, grades one through six, is now being hosted in the Marguerite H. Gill Children’s Room at the Montrose Regional Library. Works include pieces inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe and Frida Kahlo, in watercolor, tempera and collage, as well as silhouettes in cut paper and winter scenes in blown watercolor with self-portraits in tempera. The art work will be displayed until the end of February.

Chess Tournament

MONTROSE — The Third Annual Montrose County School District Chess Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Northside Elementary School gym. The tournament is open to all students in grades 1-12 and registration is $3 for individuals or $5 for two or more students from one family. Registration deadline is March 15. Lions Club Scholarship

MONTROSE — Each year the Montrose Lions Club awards several $1,000 and $500 scholarships to seniors that wish to pursue higher education or vocational/techical programs on a full-time basis. Montrose and Olathe high school seniors can apply by obtaining a application at their guidance office. Deadline is March 9, by 3:30 p.m. in the guidance office.

Music scholarship available

MONTROSE - Pickin’ at the Pavilion Bluegrass Festival is awarding two $500 scholarships at this year’s show, April 27-29. Applicants must be residents of Colorado and 21 years old or under. Scholarships will be given for study of acoustic stringed instruments, with preference to those studying traditional and/or roots music, such as bluegrass and oldtime. The scholarships can be used for music camp, workshops, college study or music enrichment. The application is available online at www.pininatthepavilion.com. It must be postmarked by March 17.

Local kids’ art displayed in Grand Junction

MONTROSE — Six Western Slope area artists are represented in a new art exhibit dedicated to the sun which will make it’s U.S. debut at Grand Junction’s City Hall starting on March 26 and displayed for three weeks.The pieces in the Sunworks Art Exhibition were selected from submissions to NASA’s SoHo Program’s Sunworks contest that ended in March 2006. Artist range from age 10 to adult. There are 24 art works from around the world. Two Montrose students who works are displayed are: Shelby Thomas and Alejandro Leyva.

Camp to help energize teen’s future

MONTROSE — Delta-Montrose Electric Association is offering two students the opportunity to attend the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp in Clark, Colo. on July 15-20. The camp helps students from across the region develop leadership skills while having fun and learning about the electrical industry. Applicants must be 16 years of age at the time of the trip, live in a household that receives electricity from DMEA, and provide a short essay (200 words) on “What is a cooperative and why is it a good way to do business?” Applications are available on DMEA’s Web site at www.dmea.com. First-time scholarship available

MONTROSE — The first annual Richard M. Longsdorf Memorial Scholarship is being offered this year to a senior attending high school in Montrose or Delta County or to a resident of those counties who was attended the county high school within the last 24 months. The scholarship may be used at an accredited school of the applicant’s choice and is renewable for three years of undergraduate study following the initial award year. Applications are available at the guidance offices of Montrose, Olathe, Nucla, Delta, Paonia, Cedaredge and Hotchkiss high schools. Applications must include transcript, essays, resume and recommendation letters. Check with the guidance offices for application deadlines.

Moms In Touch groups meet

MONTROSE — Moms In Touch International is a Christ-centered, interdenominational prayer ministry that helps mothers, grandmothers and other concerned women gather for one hour weekly to pray for their children and the schools they attend. DMEA Scholarships available

DELTA — Delta-Montrose Electrical Association is providing four $250 scholarships for enrollment into full-time programs to the Delta-Montrose Technical college in Delta. The scholarships can be used for tuition costs in several career programs. For more information call 874-6548.

MHS EPYCS Chapter offering grant money

MONTROSE — The Montrose High School El Pomar Youth in Community Service chapter has developed its mission statement for this year and invites any and all nonprofits that fit the statement to apply for grant money. The non-profit organizations will need to have an emphasis in one of the following areas: Education - drugs, gangs, STDs; Health - hospice, alcohol/drugs abuse, rehab services; Emergency Services - protective shelters and homeless issues; and a primary focus on family services and always keeping the needs of youth in mind. All EPYSC chapters grant at least $8,000 a year to 501 (3)(c) nonprofits. As much as $2,500 may go to the student service clubs of Montrose High School. Grants will be awarded in the spring. Technical College has New Student scholarship

DELTA — The Delta-Montrose Technical College is offering a special scholarship for residents of Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Ouray and San Miguel counties. For first-time students who qualify, up to one-third of tuition costs can be coved by the “New Student” scholarship for the following programs: business technology, which includes office administration, accounting technician, administrative assistant and medical administrative assistant; diesel mechanics; technical drafting and AutoCAD; cosmetology; and landscape professional.

The scholarship is available to all residents who enroll full-time in these specific degree programs. To apply call DMTC at 874-6548.

Applications being accepted scholarships

MONTROSE — Applications are now being accepted for the William Arthur and Harriette Marie Collins Lingham Memorial Scholarship. To be eligible, applicants must have attended one year in a Montrose County school. They must have demonstrated an earnest desire and ambition to acquire the education and skills for a chosen vocation, as well as performance in that vocation. They must plan to attend a vocational school, technical school, training program, a two-year college or a four-year college. There is no maximum age and a high school diploma or Montrose County residency is not required. Deadline is March 1 and must be submitted to Mr. Gordon Gibson, Assistant Superintendent, Montrose County School District RE-1J, P.O. Box 10000, Montrose, CO 81402. Kinship Connection for Kids

MONTROSE — Midwestern Colorado Mental Health Center has a support group for grandparents and other relatives who care for children. The groups meets the first and third Thursday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. downstairs at the United Methodist Church on 19 South Park in Montrose. The group gives participants support, education and information, a safe place to share feelings, access to resources and current parenting information and education.
