March Madness for local basketball teams

CEDAREDGE — With the season on the line this weekend, a number of local basketball teams will try and extend its postseason.

In Class 1A, both Crested Butte squads go into the regional playoffs as No. 2 seeds.

The CB Titans face Creede Saturday in Gunnison while the Lady Titans face LaVeta in Gunnison on Saturday as well.

In Class 2A, the Nucla Mustangs take on Meeker Saturday in Grand Junction while the Paonia Lady Eagles face Mancos in Grand Junction Saturday as well.

In Class 3A, the Basalt Lady Longhorns are the top-seed in the Sheila Quillan-Thompson Region and face Eaton, while the Hotchkiss Lady Bulldogs are the No. 5 seed and face Ellicott.

The Cedaredge Lady Bruins are the No. 1 team in the John Mraule Region and host No. 8 seed Pinnacle in the opening round. The Lady Bruins also will host No. 4 seed Pagosa Springs and the No. 5 seed Platte Valley.

The Olathe Lady Pirates have the tough task of knocking off a dangerous top-seeded Colorado Springs Christian team in the opening round of the state playoffs.

On the boys’ side of the bracket, the Roaring Fork Rams are the top seed in the Bob Chavez Region and host Bennet in the opening round. Aspen opens the state tournament as a No. 3 seed and faces No. 6 Roosevelt.

Both Cedaredge and Basalt are No. 8 seeds, the Bruins face the top-seeded and undefeated Faith Christian while the Longhorns take on No. 1 Eaton.

All first round games for Class 3A are played today.

In Class 4A, Moffat County, Rifle and Glenwood Springs are the last three teams from the Western Slope on the girls bracket.

The Lady Bulldogs face the Lady Bears today at Moffat County. The Lady Demons face Pueblo Central. On the boys' side, Steamboat Springs takes on a tough D'Evelyn squad today.

The Grand Junction girls were knocked out by top-seeded Legacy in the Sweet 16 of the Class 5A playoffs, while the Durango boys lost to Brighton in the second round.
