Free flu shots offered

MONTROSE — Beginning March 7 through the end of the month, Safeway in conjunction with Colorado Influenza and Pneumococcal Alert Coalition (CIPAC) will offer free flu vaccinations to customers while supplies last. The shots will be available and administered at Safeway pharmacies across Colorado. Adults and children 11 years and older are eligible for the vaccinations.

Diabetes extravaganza

MONTROSE — A Diabetes Extravaganza will be held Saturday, March 24 at the Montrose Pavilion. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.; first session is at 9 a.m. The event is free and open to everyone and will feature physician lectures, vendors, mini clinics and educational sessions. Habitat for Humanity benefit

MONTROSE — A fund-raiser to benefit Habitat for Humanity will be held Friday, March 16, from 5 to 7 p.m., at The Bridges Golf and Country Club in Montrose. Attendees will be able to meet nationally syndicated radio talk show host and energy expert Doug Rye. County crews go to summer hours

MONTROSE — Beginning March 12 through Nov. 3, 2007, Montrose County Road and Bridge crews will be working summer hours, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Food handler training class

MONTROSE — Colorado State University Cooperative Extension along with Montrose County Health and Human Services will be hosting a "Food Safety Works" safe food handler training class from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 12 at the health and human services facility, 1845 S.     Deadline approaches for emergency farm loans

    MONTROSE — March 12, 2007 is the deadline for producers in Delta, Gunnison, Ouray and Montrose counties to apply for an emergency loan based on damages and losses caused by ongoing drought, fire, high winds, late freeze, insect pests and heat that occurred from Jan. 1, 2006 and continuing.     Public input meetings for comprehensive plan

    MONTROSE — The City of Montrose will be holding two public input meetings for the Comprehensive Plan update on Tuesday, March 20 at the Montrose Pavilion. The city is offering two different times for these meetings: 3:30 to 6 p.m. and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Each meeting will cover the same material, and participants do not need to attend both.     MAPA 'trivia night' fund-raiser

    MONTROSE — Trivia buffs are invited to test their skills at the second annual Montrose Animal Protection Agency (MAPA) "Trivia Night" on Saturday, March 24 at the United Methodist Church in Montrose.     Chess tournament

    MONTROSE — The third annual Montrose County School District chess tournament will be held Saturday, March 24 at Northside Elementary School. The tournament is open to all students in grades 1-12.     Rosemont Baptist to host missions fair

    MONTROSE — The Rosemont Baptist Church, 1598 E. Niagara Rd., will host a missions fair at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 25. The missions fair will showcase several advocacy and charitable organizations operating in Montrose and Olathe, including the Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center, jail ministries, Voices for Children, Life Choice Pregnancy Center, Christ's Kitchen and Olathe's House of Promise.     Spay Day

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Animal Shelter will host "Spay Day" March 26 and 27. Vets from the Denver area will be onsite to provide low-cost spays and neuters for cats and dogs.     Cost share funding available for irrigation projects

    MONTROSE — The Shavano Conservation District and the Natural Resources Conservation Service have cost share incentives available to assist water users and land owners in improving water efficiency and salt reduction. All water delivery projects and irrigation systems that make a substantial contribution to salinity reduction will be prioritized and considered.     Region 10 proposals due April 13

    MONTROSE — The Region10 Area Agency on Aging is requesting proposals from public, private, and non-profit organizations to provide services and programs for older adult citizens (60+) in Region 10 (Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel Counties) utilizing FY 2008 Older Americans Act funds and Older Coloradans Act funds.     Non-profit needs community's support

    OLATHE — Dream Catcher Therapy, a non-profit organization, opened it doors as a equine rescue and sanctuary called End of the Trail.     Donate to Pet Overpopulation Fund

    MONTROSE — The Pet Overpopulation Fund, which helps furnish grants to veterinarians and animal care and control agencies to subsidize spay/neuter programs, is asking taxpayers to donate to the cause.

    Donations can be made by checking off line 38 of the state income tax form and indicating the amount of the donation. The state will forward the designated amount to the fund and all donations are used to the benefit of cats and dogs. Locally, the Montrose Animal Protection Agency recieved a $15,000 grant from 2005 donations.

    Flamingo flocking fund-raiser

    MONTROSE — The Montrose High School ASTRA Club is once again accepting orders for flamingo flockings. "Flamingos for Friends and Foes." The 3-foot-tall yard flamingos can be rented from 20 to 100 birds per order; cost is $1 per bird. A neck tag explains who the birds are from and the occasion.     Fund for help Blas Family

    MONTROSE — A medical benefit fund has been set up to help the family of Ubaldo Blas. Blas, 32, is a Montrose resident with two kids who recently was diagnosed with Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy in Denver.     Public Lands Center seeking volunteers

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Public Lands Center is looking for volunteers to be part of the visitor information team. The center is looking for people who like working with the public and are knowledgeable and passionate about the Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service and National Park Service lands in the area. Volunteers will greet visitors to the center, answer recreation and land use questions, answer the telephone and perform other general light office work. Training and a uniform will be provided.     Seedling tree program

    MONTROSE — Seedling trees are now available to order through the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and Colorado State Forest Service Conservation Tree Program. To qualify you must own at least two acres of land. Trees must be planted for the purpose of creating windbreaks, wildlife habitat, erosion control, etc.; they many not be used for ornamental or landscaping plantings or sold as live trees.     UVLA continues tradition of legal service

    MONTROSE — Uncompahgre Volunteer Legal Aid (UVLA) provides low-income residents of Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel counties and elderly residents of Montrose, Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Ouray and San Miguel counties with legal assistance.     VCB announces changes to funding policy

    MONTROSE — The Board of Directors of the Montrose Visitors & Convention Bureau recently approved a change to the funding policy pertaining to special events. In recent years, applications for promotional funds have been accepted for review on a monthly basis, beginning January 2007, however, requests will be reviewed on a quarterly basis. Applications for funding must be submitted for review by the VCB Board no less than 120 days prior to the date of the actual event. Early application is appreciated; however, review of applications will take place no more than 180 days prior to the event.     Compost bins available

    MONTROSE — As part of their ongoing efforts to promote recycling, the Environmental Committee of the Montrose Altrusa Club, along with the City of Montrose Recycle Task Force, is selling expandable compost bins for $20 each. The bins are made from heavy black plastic, with air holes in the sides, and are expandable and portable. They are available at city hall and are also being sold at Farmers Market on Saturdays.     New policy from state Dept. of Revenue

    MONTROSE — Effective July 1, 2006 Montrose County Clerk and Recorder's Office will be implementing a new policy from the Colorado State Department of Revenue. This policy requires all motor vehicle transactions to be accompanied by any form of secure and verifiable identification. The following is a list of transactions that will require your identification:

  • New titles

  • Duplicate titles

  • New registrations

  • New temporary registration permits

  • New placards

    Also when someone other than a named owner chooses to complete a transaction for the named owner, the named owner will be required to provide a non-secure power of attorney naming the agent. All dealers are required to include a readable photocopy of the SVI to complete title transactions.     Volunteer board members sought

    MONTROSE — Voices for Children, a non-profit agency that provides volunteer advocates for abused children in the court system, has openings on its board of directors. The board is seeking individuals from the business, education, law enforcement and general communities of Delta, Montrose, Ouray and Gunnison counties who have an interest in children. Board members typically spend an average of four to six hours per month.     Migrant Seasonal Head Start

    OLATHE — The Migrant Seasonal Head Start, an early childhood development program, is now providing services for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of migrant families that are working in agriculture. Services are free to qualifying families, and children with disabilities are welcome to the program. Applications will continue to be accepted throughout the agricultural season.     Meals on Wheels volunteers needed

    MONTROSE — Volunteer drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels Program in the Montrose area. There are between 80 to 85 meals delivered to the homebound Monday through Friday from the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center, on six different routes. The meals are picked up at 11 a.m. at the senior center. Each route takes from 45 minutes to one hour to deliver. Volunteers usually sign up for one week at a time.     Sons of American Legion

    MONTROSE — Montrose American Legion Post 73 has received inquiries and interest about starting a Sons of the American Legion Squadron in Montrose.     Task force targets pedestrian safety

    MONTROSE — The Traffic Issues Task Force, a group commissioned by the City of Montrose to examine current and future issues within the city, has targeted pedestrian safety as one of its top priorities. An educational pamphlet containing “rules of the road” and safety tips for pedestrians and motorists has been prepared for distribution to the public. The Montrose Police Department and Montrose Fire Protection District personnel will be working cooperatively to distribute the pamphlet to pedestrians and motorists on the street.     DAV looking for volunteer drivers
