City plans 125th anniversary celebration

MONTROSE — The city of Montrose is planning events on May 2 and May 5 in celebration of the city’s 125th anniversary.

  • Wednesday, May 2: “Historic Review of Montrose,” 6 p.m., Pavilion. Free admission; tickets are required and may be picked up at the chamber or City Hall starting April 9.

  • Saturday, May 5:

    Kiwanis Club breakfast, 8 a.m., Centennial Plaza.

    Lunch served from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. by Chamber Redcoats, Centennial Plaza.

    Parade at noon (line-up begins at 11 a.m. on N. Stough).

    Fire District open house, 1-3 p.m.

    Mayor’s reception, 4 p.m., Centennial Plaza.

    Dinner served from 4 to 7 p.m. by Cinco de Mayo, Centennial Plaza.

    On Saturday, there will also be guided walking tours of downtown; free admission to Museum of the Mountain West from 2 to 4 p.m.; free admission to the Ute Indian Museum from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and a host of other events.

Eller was nominated for the “America’s Most Wanted” television program’s “All Star Award.” Voting can be done online at .     Crime free program

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Police Department will host a “crime-free multi-housing” training sessions for the owners, managers and landlords of rental properties.

    The class will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1, at the Montrose Library conference room, 302 South Second St. Cost for each participant is $30. Registration can be made at the police department on South First Street. Class size is limited to 40.

    The crime-free multi-housing program assists rental property owners and managers in reducing crime, reducing drug crimes and improving the overall safety of their properties. Anyone interested in learning more about the program can contact Sgt. Paul Eller at 252-5225 or visit .

    Arts council offers camp scholarships

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Arts Council is offering up to four performing arts camp scholarships to students ages 12-18 who live in Montrose County. Scholarship forms have been sent to choir and band directors, dance studios and most piano/voice teachers.     Deadline approaches for emergency farm loans

    MONTROSE — May 1, 2007 is the deadline for producers in Delta, Gunnison and Montrose Counties to apply for an emergency loan based on damages and losses caused by ongoing drought that occurred from Jan. 1, 2006 and continuing.     Free baby items

    MONTROSE — Life Choices Pregnancy Center is offering the “Earn While You Learn” program. A mother or mother-to-be can enroll and earn all the baby items she needs for her baby up to a year old. The client will be paired with a mommy mentor and agree to take prenatal, parenting, life skills, and/or relationship classes to earn free mommy money. The mommy money is spent in the center’s baby boutique, which is stocked with baby needs including maternity clothes.     Cancer Center celebration

    MONTROSE — The San Juan Cancer Center Fund Drive Committee is hosting “The Last Round-up”, an evening of cowboy poets, to celebrate reaching the fund drive goal of $1 million dollars.     CASA volunteer training

    MONTROSE — Voices for Children is a non-profit agency that provides Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Volunteers to courts in Montrose, Delta, Ouray, Gunnison and Hinsdale counties. CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge to advocate for abused and neglected children by researching the case and making recommendations regarding the child’s best interests.     Benefit for orphaned Filipino children

    MONTROSE — The community is invited to a free dinner and silent auction to benefit orphaned Filipino children at 6 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Holiday Inn Express, hosted by Hands On Foundation. The silent auction will raise money to complete construction of the children’s home “Atlantis” in a geographically stable area. Currently, the orphans live in an area threatened by landslides.     MONTROSE — The Ute Indian Museum will host the fourth annual Chipeta walk, “Walking to Remember” and “Healing the Heart” on Saturday, April 28:

  • At 6 a.m., an outside sunrise blessing will be given by Cheyenne River Sioux religious leader Arvol Looking Horse and Uncompahgre Ute Roland McCook.

  • At 9 a.m., walkers will depart from Baldridge Park on a three-mile walk to the Ute Museum.

  • At 11:30 a.m., Roland McCook will share the legacy of Chipeta.

  • At noon, Arvol Looking Horse will conduct a pipe ceremony and program on world peace and unity.

    Montrose unveils public art exhibit

    MONTROSE — The City of Montrose, along with the Montrose Chamber of Commerce Public Art eXperience (PAX) committee, is now displaying eight bronze sculptures by artist Robert J. Wick of Arizona.     Rim drives open at Black Canyon

    MONTROSE — The South and North Rim Roads are open at the Black Canyon National Park. Loop A of the South Rim Campground and the North Rim Campground are also open, but water is not yet available. Snow and mud may be present on some of the trails, but all overlooks are open. The South Rim Visitor Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the spring.     Memorial fund set up

    OURAY — A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Ouray residents Addie Sim and Ramona Radcliff. Sim served as Ouray County Clerk from 1963 to 1994. She passed away Jan. 18, 2007. Radcliff served as Ouray County Treasurer from 1965 to the end of 2006. She passed away Feb. 23, 2007. Donations will be used to purchase a bench to be placed outside the Ouray County Courthouse. If enough funds are raised, plans are to purchase trees to be planted behind the bench.     OLATHE — Dream Catcher Therapy, a non-profit organization, opened it doors as a equine rescue and sanctuary called End of the Trail.     Donate to Pet Overpopulation Fund

    MONTROSE — The Pet Overpopulation Fund, which helps furnish grants to veterinarians and animal care and control agencies to subsidize spay/neuter programs, is asking taxpayers to donate to the cause.

    Donations can be made by checking off line 38 of the state income tax form and indicating the amount of the donation. The state will forward the designated amount to the fund and all donations are used to the benefit of cats and dogs. Locally, the Montrose Animal Protection Agency recieved a $15,000 grant from 2005 donations.

    Flamingo flocking fund-raiser

    MONTROSE — The Montrose High School ASTRA Club is once again accepting orders for flamingo flockings. “Flamingos for Friends and Foes.” The 3-foot-tall yard flamingos can be rented from 20 to 100 birds per order; cost is $1 per bird. A neck tag explains who the birds are from and the occasion. Funds raised this year will go toward several local projects and helping youth in Uganda.     Public Lands Center seeking volunteers

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Public Lands Center is looking for volunteers to be part of the visitor information team. The center is looking for people who like working with the public and are knowledgeable and passionate about the Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service and National Park Service lands in the area.     Seedling tree program

    MONTROSE — Seedling trees are now available to order through the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and Colorado State Forest Service Conservation Tree Program. To qualify you must own at least two acres of land. Trees must be planted for the purpose of creating windbreaks, wildlife habitat, erosion control, etc.; they many not be used for ornamental or landscaping plantings or sold as live trees.     VCB announces changes to funding policy

    MONTROSE — The Board of Directors of the Montrose Visitors & Convention Bureau recently approved a change to the funding policy pertaining to special events. In recent years, applications for promotional funds have been accepted for review on a monthly basis, beginning January 2007, however, requests will be reviewed on a quarterly basis. Applications for funding must be submitted for review by the VCB Board no less than 120 days prior to the date of the actual event. Early application is appreciated; however, review of applications will take place no more than 180 days prior to the event.     Compost bins available

    New policy from state Dept. of Revenue

    MONTROSE — Effective July 1, 2006 Montrose County Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be implementing a new policy from the Colorado State Department of Revenue. This policy requires all motor vehicle transactions to be accompanied by any form of secure and verifiable identification. The following is a list of transactions that will require your identification:

  • New titles

  • Duplicate titles

  • New registrations

  • New temporary registration permits

  • New placards

    Also when someone other than a named owner chooses to complete a transaction for the named owner, the named owner will be required to provide a non-secure power of attorney naming the agent. All dealers are required to include a readable photocopy of the SVI to complete title transactions.     Volunteer board members sought

    MONTROSE — Voices for Children, a non-profit agency that provides volunteer advocates for abused children in the court system, has openings on its board of directors. The board is seeking individuals from the business, education, law enforcement and general communities of Delta, Montrose, Ouray and Gunnison counties who have an interest in children. Board members typically spend an average of four to six hours per month.     Migrant Seasonal Head Start

    Meals on Wheels volunteers needed

    MONTROSE — Volunteer drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels Program in the Montrose area. There are between 80 to 85 meals delivered to the homebound Monday through Friday from the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center, on six different routes. The meals are picked up at 11 a.m. at the senior center. Each route takes from 45 minutes to one hour to deliver. Volunteers usually sign up for one week at a time.     MONTROSE — The Colorado Quitline, a free telephone service that helps callers quit smoking and using tobacco, has announced that it is now offering free nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches to anyone who enrolls in the cessation program.     Task force targets pedestrian safety

    MONTROSE — The Traffic Issues Task Force, a group commissioned by the City of Montrose to examine current and future issues within the city, has targeted pedestrian safety as one of its top priorities. An educational pamphlet containing “rules of the road” and safety tips for pedestrians and motorists has been prepared for distribution to the public. The Montrose Police Department and Montrose Fire Protection District personnel will be working cooperatively to distribute the pamphlet to pedestrians and motorists on the street.
