Troop 491 hosting fundraiser

MONTROSE — On Saturday, April 14, Boy Scout Troop 491 will host a fund-raising lunch and cakewalk from 12 to 2 p.m. and an auction from 2 to 3 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $7 for adult and $5 for children under 8. The auction is open to the public. The fundraiser will be held at the Elks Lodge in Montrose. Proceeds go to the scouts/venture crew scouts for summer camp and updating equipment. MHS graduates from CSU with top honors

MONTROSE — Rachel Lauren Pearsall, MHS Class of 2003, will graduate from Colorado State University-Fort Collins on May 12, 2007 at the top of her class. She is currently holding a 4.0 cumulative GPA and will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in biological science-anatomy and physiology. She is a CSU Honors Program graduate and member of the national Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is also a Hughes Undergraduate Research Scholar and a two-year member of Dr. Turner's medical research team at the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She has been a TA, Honors Peer Mentor, member of the Pre-Vet club, a RAM Ride volunteer, Biology Department volunteer, fund-raiser and house-builder for CSU Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. She's been accepted to the CSU Veterinary Medicine School and will start the DVM program in fall of 2007.

Meet and greet principal candidates

MONTROSE — Parents, students and other community members will have a chance on April 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Montrose High School cafeteria to meet and greet the candidates for three elementary principal vacancies. There are 13 finalists for three leadership positions in our district. The event will allow each finalist to introduce themselves to the community.

DMEA provides scholarship

MONTROSE — Delta-Montrose Electric Association will provide a $1,000 scholarship to a student from a DMEA member attending the Montrose Campus of Mesa State College. Scholarship funds are provided through DMEA's Unclaimed Capital Credits Fund. Deadline is June 1 and applications are available at the Montrose campus or at www.mesastate.edu. Black Canyon Classics Car Club Scholarship

MONTROSE — Applications for the Black Canyon Classics Car Club Scholarship are currently available to current or past graduates of high schools in Montrose, Delta, Ouray or San Miguel counties. Applicants must be residents who are enrolling in a post secondary program. Preference will be given to applicants pursing a study in the automotive technology field, including auto mechanics and bodywork, or pursing a study in a computer field. Post secondary programs can include programs at vocational and technical schools, training programs, two and four year colleges. Applications are in the guidance offices of eligible high schools. The application must be postmarked by June 15 and mailed to the Black Canyon classic Car Club, P.O. Box 3056, Montrose, CO 81402.

Two scholarships available

MONTROSE — The Montrose Cattlewomen are offering two scholarships for high school students going into an agriculture related field. Western music faculty recital

GUNNISON — Kenneth Todd and Alicia Belgiovane will present a faculty recital of works for violin or viola with piano tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Quigley Recital Hall at Western State College in Gunnison. The program will include Handel's Sonata No. 4 in D Major, Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise," and Fritz Kreisler's "Praeludium and Allegro" for violin and piano. Friends of Ridgway State Park offer scholarships

MONTROSE — The Friends of Ridgway State Park are offering tow $750 scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year. Scholarships will be available for students who are graduates of area high schools and who are majoring in natural resources or associated degrees at a four-year college or university. Applicants are required to complete an application form and hand in transcripts, personal essay and letters of recommendation for faculty. Deadline is May 1. Norwood Math Bee finalists need assistance

MONTROSE — Norwood Elementary School is asking for donations to help with the cost of sending 19 students to Birmingham, Ala. on May 4 to compete in the national Math Bee Tournament. The students will compete against teams from 28 other states and will be vying for their share of $60,000 in scholarship certificates from Virginia College Online, as well as individual ribbons, trophies and computers for their participating schools.

Early childhood centers hold registration

MONTROSE — The Montrose/Olathe Early Childhood Centers will have registration for the 2007-2008 school year for Head Start, the Colorado Preschool Program and the School District Special Needs Program. To be eligible children must be 3 years old before Sept. 15. Registration for 4-year-olds will be on Tuesday, April 17 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Registration for 3-year-olds will be the same times on Wednesday, April 18. Registration for Spanish-speaking families will be the same times on Thursday, April 19. All registrations will be held at the Family Service Center at 900 Colorado Ave., Unit 4 in Montrose. Unless absolutely necessary, please do not bring you children, registration does take a minimum of one hour. Bring with you: birth certificate, child's up-to-date immunization records, 2006 Income Tax Return or employer's statement, TANF and/or Child Support documentation if applicable, Medicaid card/CHP+ or insurance card.

Energy-saving SEI workshops

Money available for solar energy workshops

MONTROSE — Delta-Montrose Electric Association is offering scholarships for co-op members to attend Solar Energy International workshops. Scholarships are available to any DMEA member or member dependent and can be used for any of SEI's courses. High school and college students are eligible for a full scholarship; others can receive a 40 percent discount off tuition. SEI's renewable energy education workshops include PV design and installation, straw bale construction, residential wind power, micro-hydro, solar hot water, and radiant heading. District holds kindergarten registration

MONTROSE — All Elementary schools in the Montrose County School District will hold kindergarten registration on Wednesday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All children who are five years of age by Sept. 15 are eligible to register. Attendance is strong encouraged, but if you are unable to attend, please call the district with the child's information. A walk-in immunization clinic has been scheduled at the Montrose County Public Health and Human Services at 1845 S. Townsend Ave. in Montrose on April 18 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m. It is first-come, first-serve basis or by appointment by calling 252-5000. Archaeology, anthropology scholarships

MONTROSE — Applications for the Chipeta Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society's Juanita and Squint Moore Scholarship are currently available to high school, college or graduate students within the Montrose, Delta, Mesa, San Miguel, Ouray and San Juan counties. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in archaeology or anthropology. Scholarships funds may be used for formal school study, field school or ongoing professional work. Applications and more information are available at the guidance office of high schools in the eligible counties.

Financial grants for non-traditional females

MONTROSE — Montrose campus is now taking applications for financial grants given to non-traditional female students who are residents of Montrose or Olathe and attending Mesa's Montrose campus. Applications are available at the Montrose campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants must prove financial need. For more information call 249-7009

Workman-loss scholarship available

MONTROSE — St. Mary's Workman-loss scholarship is seeking applications for a financial grant to be given to a member of St. Mary's Parish-Montrose, or Our Lady of Fatima-Olathe. The grant is available to a women seeking to se into the work force or to improve her present skills. It can also be used for a vocational school or other training programs. Camp to help energize teen's future

MONTROSE — Delta-Montrose Electric Association is offering two students the opportunity to attend the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp in Clark, Colo. on July 15-20. The camp helps students from across the region develop leadership skills while having fun and learning about the electrical industry. Applicants must be 16 years of age at the time of the trip, live in a household that receives electricity from DMEA, and provide a short essay (200 words) on "What is a cooperative and why is it a good way to do business?" Hartman Brothers' Scholarship

MONTROSE — The Hartman Brothers of Montrose announces that applications are now available for the Hartman Brothers Centennial Scholarship for medical/nursing and technical/vocational. Students who will graduate or who have graduated within the last 2 years from Montrose, Olathe and Vista high schools are eligible to apply, along with graduates of a Christian or home school in Montrose or Olathe. Applications are available at the guidance office at the high school and at Delta-Montrose Technical College. Deadline is April 25.

Children's Poetry Day at library

MONTROSE — Children in grades one through six are invited to celebrate poetry in a series of "play shops" and poetry readings on Saturday, April 14, at the Montrose regional Library. Guest poet and educator Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer will host the gathering. Trommer is a poet laureate of San Miguel County and author of "If You Listen," winner of the Colorado Independent Press Association award.

The following events will be sponsored by the Montrose Friends of the Library and the Marguerite H. Gill Children's Room:

Yeppee, It's Poetry! from 1 to 1:30 p.m. for grades 1-3. This will be a half-hour of word play and poetry performances, even creating a poem of the day.

Putting on our Poet Eyes from 2 to 3 p.m. for grades 4-6. This 50-minute play shop, kids have a chance to write several different kinds of poems and play with words in new ways. Just need paper and a pencil.

Poetry "Aloud" Here from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for children to read their own poems, with Trommer as the MC.

Delta Montrose Basketball Officials Association scholarship

MONTROSE — The Delta Montrose Basketball Officials Association announces a new scholarship created for the purpose of promoting the further education of graduates of school in their area who participated in high school basketball. The scholarships are intended for one boy and one girl who exemplify good moral character, good sportsmanship and fair play on and off the court, have above average scholarship and contribute to extra curricular activities. Application are available at the guidance offices of Crested Butte, Gunnison, Paonia, Delta, Olathe, Montrose, Ridgway, Ouray, Telluride and Norwood. Deadline is May 1.

ElderAdo Scholarship available

MONTROSE — Jim and Janet Elder are please to announce the availability of the ElderAdo Scholarship for 2007. This scholarship has been created as a way to reward students pursing a business related degree that have been self-starters and hardworking at Montrose High School and within the community, focusing on community service, high school involvement and academic achievement. MHS 2007 graduates who will attend an in-state or out-of-state school and pursue a business or business related program are eligible. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, a resume and essay. Applications may be picked up at the MHS Guidance Office or at ElderAdo Financial at 1100 S. Townsend Ave. in Montrose.

First-time scholarship available

MONTROSE — The first annual Richard M. Longsdorf Memorial Scholarship is being offered this year to a senior attending high school in Montrose or Delta County or to a resident of those counties who was attended the county high school within the last 24 months. The scholarship may be used at an accredited school of the applicant's choice and is renewable for three years of undergraduate study following the initial award year. Applications are available at the guidance offices of Montrose, Olathe, Nucla, Delta, Paonia, Cedaredge and Hotchkiss high schools. Applications must include transcript, essays, resume and recommendation letters. Check with the guidance offices for application deadlines.

Moms In Touch groups meet

MONTROSE — Moms In Touch International is a Christ-centered, interdenominational prayer ministry that helps mothers, grandmothers and other concerned women gather for one hour weekly to pray for their children and the schools they attend. DMEA Scholarships available

DELTA — Delta-Montrose Electrical Association is providing four $250 scholarships for enrollment into full-time programs to the Delta-Montrose Technical college in Delta. The scholarships can be used for tuition costs in several career programs. For more information call 874-6548.

Technical College has New Student scholarship

DELTA — The Delta-Montrose Technical College is offering a special scholarship for residents of Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Ouray and San Miguel counties. For first-time students who qualify, up to one-third of tuition costs can be coved by the "New Student" scholarship for the following programs: business technology, which includes office administration, accounting technician, administrative assistant and medical administrative assistant; diesel mechanics; technical drafting and AutoCAD; cosmetology; and landscape professional.

The scholarship is available to all residents who enroll full-time in these specific degree programs. To apply call DMTC at 874-6548.

Kinship Connection for Kids

MONTROSE — Midwestern Colorado Mental Health Center has a support group for grandparents and other relatives who care for children. The groups meets the first and third Thursday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. downstairs at the United Methodist Church on 19 South Park in Montrose. The group gives participants support, education and information, a safe place to share feelings, access to resources and current parenting information and education.
