Wednesday night/125th birthday notes, at the Montrose Pavilion.
Would believe their spirit of volunteerism added some zest to the spirit of the evening..
Happy Birthday Greetings! to One of Life’s Good Guys, Rotary Club president and school board member, Jim Schwoebel.
Speaking of One of Life’s Good Guys…….
The Notebook was saddened to read how Eldon Musselmann is retiring for good, closing his doors of his shoe shop/boot repair this weekend.
Simply put, he’s the best “leathersmith” I’ve known. He’s fixed Woody family briefcases, baseball gloves, footwear, purses and so forth. Always with a friendly conversation, and a reasonable price. An artisan, and a good man.
One more retirement note, also for One of Life’s Good Guys, Mary Lou Jeffers.
Mary Lou has been the longtime night mailroom foreman for the Daily Press. She joined us when we added our Sunday edition, almost 10 years ago.
We print a good many Western Slope newspapers in our commercial printing division, and part of the service is mailroom services. We have two crews, one day, one night, and they “assemble” the newspaper after printing — inserting sections, specials, and all those marketing inserts.
Mary Lou was responsible for staff scheduling and making sure the right insert got into the right newspaper on the right day. Get it wrong, and the telephone rings and the complaints roll in. Mary Lou got it right, and did so gracefully. She often followed up with printing customers via telephone to ensure the proper order.
She’s a cancer survivor, too — three-plus years out, and doing well. Her positive outlook was good for us, and our customers.
She’ll be missed, and we wish her the best.
Coming Sunday, in the Montrose Daily Press. It’ll be a good one.
More music Saturday. This update, from Blue Sky’s Dave Bowman:
Quotable
“If you hear a voice within you saying, ‘You are not a painter,’ then by all means, paint. And that voice will be silenced.”
—Vincent Van Gogh, artist
