CELEBRATE AMERICA!!

MONTROSE — Students entering grades 1 - 8 are welcome to attend the Summer Discovery Camp. There will be two sessions: Session 1: June 4 - June 14, 2007 (Monday - Thursday), Session 2: June 18 - June 28, 2007 (Monday - Thursday) 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The sessions will be held at the Montrose High School and Olathe Elementary School. Cost is $100.00 per 2 week Session - full lunch price; $ 60.00 per 2 week Session - reduced lunch price; $ 30.00 per 2 week Session - free lunch. Breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt are provided at no additional cost! Classes will be offered to grades 1-3, 4-5, and 6-8. Registration Deadline is May 18. MONTROSE — The public is invited for free food and information in an "Adults: Learn Our Youth" event, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Montrose Pavilion. Doors open at 5 p.m., May 15.

Listen to the experts talk about some enabling facts of tough choices our community youth are faced with everyday. Learn how they are acquiring alcohol and illegal substances, and their signs and symptoms. Help our community get stronger with awareness and action to take care of our youth. Recognize the local businesses that are pledging to help.

125th celebration kids' events

MONTROSE — The Montrose Regional Library is celebrating the 125th anniversary of Montrose by hosting a story and craft hour entitled, "Westward Ho!" Children between ages three and eight are invited to join us for stories, songs and a craft activity on May 5 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Marguerite H. Gill Children's Room. Premier exhibitor info packet available

MONTROSE — An information packet for all 4-Hers desiring to participate in the Premier Exhibitor contest during the fair is now available at the Delta Extension Office, located at 525 Dodge Street in Delta. Packets can be picked up, including scoring information and tips on making a successful presentation, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and noon, and 1 to 5 p.m. For more information contact the office at (970) 874-2195.

Jo Collins Memorial Scholarship

MONTROSE — Applications for the Jo Collins Memorial Scholarship are currently available to seniors at Montrose High School. The scholarship is made possible by the proceeds from the Jo Collins Memorial Golf Tournament, which is held annually at the Links at Cobble Creek and Black Canyon Golf Club. The purpose of the scholarship is to honor Jo’s life and her impact on the community. Collins was a native of Colorado, who attended both the University of Colorado and Western State College. She was a substitute teacher, a real estate agent, and ministered at the county jail.

This scholarship will be awarded to two graduating seniors of Montrose High School who exemplify leadership, community service, financial need and who plan to pursue a four year college degree at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0

Applications are available at the guidance office of Montrose High School and must be returned by May 15. Questions about the scholarship may be directed to the guidance office.

Colorado 4-H offer support to military families

FORT COLLINS — During the State 4-H conference at Colorado State June 19-22, 4-H'ers will fill "Hero Packs" for children of deployed military parents. Hero Packs serve as a tangible expression of support for military families from their communities and Operation Military Kids partners. The packs are filled by non-military youth with mementos and items such as cameras, journals, stamps and letter writing materials designed to help connect kids with their deployed parent. MONTROSE — Applications for the Black Canyon Classics Car Club Scholarship are currently available to current or past graduates of high schools in Montrose, Delta, Ouray or San Miguel County. Applicants must be residents of these counties who are enrolling in a post secondary program. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a study in the automotive technology field, including auto mechanics and bodywork, or pursing a study in a computer field. Post secondary programs can include programs at vocational and technical schools, training programs, two and four year colleges. Applications are available at the guidance office of the eligible high schools. Applications must be postmarked by June 15 and mailed to the Black Canyon Classic Car Club, P.O. Box 3056, Montrose, CO 81402. Questions about the scholarship may be directed to these guidance offices.

Annual education foundation golf tournament

MONTROSE — Have some fun and support public education at the same time by participating in the 4th Annual Montrose Education Foundation Golf Tournament being held Saturday, May 19. Register to play or sponsor the event. All proceeds will benefit the Montrose Education Foundation who's mission is "to encourage the success of students and teachers in Montrose and Olathe by recognizing the value of education through the enhancement of educational opportunities." MHS Senior Class Party

MONTROSE — On May 27, Montrose High School seniors will be graduating. At the end of each year, parents and community members contribute time and money to sponsor a party for the seniors. Since the tradition started in 1985, there hasn't been one serious accident to a graduate on this celebration evening. It is a safe, alcohol and drug-free night and historically over 94 percent of the seniors have attended this event. Community help is necessary to ensure the success of the party by providing food, prizes and cash donations. The seniors currently have reached 65 percent of their goal, but still need HELP! Bel Canto represents Colorado in D.C.

MONTROSE — The Montrose High School Bel Canto Singers will be representing Colorado as the vocal group in Washington D.C. on Flag Day, June 14, for the Finale of the National Anthem Project. This will be national televised. In order to finish raising several thousand dollars that is need to embark on the trip, Bel Canto is holding a garage sale/car wash on Saturday, April 28, at MHS from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you have any items that you would like to donate to our garage sale, please contact Cheryl Leu: cleu@mcsd.k12.co.us. Also, ROTC has graciously said they will let items be dropped off at their room located in the northwest parking lot along Townsend Ave. on Friday, April 27 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Outside of these times, items can be dropped off in MHS room 124.

5K run at Centennial

MONTROSE — Centennial Middle School is hosting a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and 5K race on May 18 and 19. The spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be held at the school's cafeteria on Friday, May 18 starting at 5 p.m.; silent auction tables close at 7 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and $3.50 for students.

The 5K run/walk will be held Saturday, May 19, starting at the Centennial Track at 8:30 a.m. Race day registration and packet pick-up will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 8 a.m. The first 150 students and 150 adults to register will receive a free "Braves Run" t-shirt. Race divisions include: elementary students; six-, seven-, and eighth-grade students; high school students; 19-29 years; 30-39 years; 40-49 years; and 50 and older.

Register before May 11 and save! After May 11, register at the race to avoid race-day confusion. Cost for students is $7 before May 11 and $10 the day of the race. Adults are $20 for early registration and $25 the day of the race.

San Juan Healthcare Foundation

MONTROSE — The San Juan Healthcare Foundation and the Montrose Medical Alliance are accepting applications for scholarship awards for training in the health sciences field. Applicants of any age wishing to pursue training in a health related field are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants from the Montrose area who intend to return to this area to utilize their talents. This scholarship is open to any high school graduate, nurse, medical student, therapist, hospital employee, or anyone anticipating health sciences training. Applications may be obtained by contacting Lark Jacobsen in Administration at Montrose Memorial Hospital, 800 S. Third St., Montrose, CO 81401, by phone at 240-7397, or by email at ljacobsen@montrosehospital.com. Applications will be taken through May 16, and the recipient will be announced on May 24. The San Juan Healthcare Foundation Board will make the selection of the winner.

DMEA provides scholarship

MONTROSE — Delta-Montrose Electric Association will provide a $1,000 scholarship to a student from a DMEA member attending the Montrose Campus of Mesa State College. Scholarship funds are provided through DMEA's Unclaimed Capital Credits Fund. Deadline is June 1 and applications are available at the Montrose campus or at www.mesastate.edu. Two scholarships available

MONTROSE — The Montrose Cattlewomen are offering two scholarships for high school students going into an agriculture related field. Money available for solar energy workshops

MONTROSE — Delta-Montrose Electric Association is offering scholarships for co-op members to attend Solar Energy International workshops. Scholarships are available to any DMEA member or member dependent and can be used for any of SEI's courses. High school and college students are eligible for a full scholarship; others can receive a 40 percent discount off tuition. SEI's renewable energy education workshops include PV design and installation, straw bale construction, residential wind power, micro-hydro, solar hot water, and radiant heading. Archaeology, anthropology scholarships

MONTROSE — Applications for the Chipeta Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society's Juanita and Squint Moore Scholarship are currently available to high school, college or graduate students within the Montrose, Delta, Mesa, San Miguel, Ouray and San Juan counties. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in archaeology or anthropology. Scholarships funds may be used for formal school study, field school or ongoing professional work. Applications and more information are available at the guidance office of high schools in the eligible counties.

Financial grants for non-traditional females

MONTROSE — Montrose campus is now taking applications for financial grants given to non-traditional female students who are residents of Montrose or Olathe and attending Mesa's Montrose campus. Applications are available at the Montrose campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants must prove financial need. For more information call 249-7009

ElderAdo Scholarship available

MONTROSE — Jim and Janet Elder are please to announce the availability of the ElderAdo Scholarship for 2007. This scholarship has been created as a way to reward students pursing a business related degree who have been self-starters and hardworking at Montrose High School and within the community, focusing on community service, high school involvement and academic achievement. MHS 2007 graduates who will attend an in-state or out-of-state school and pursue a business or business related program are eligible. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, a resume and essay. Applications may be picked up at the MHS Guidance Office or at ElderAdo Financial at 1100 S. Townsend Ave. in Montrose.

First-time scholarship available

MONTROSE — The first annual Richard M. Longsdorf Memorial Scholarship is being offered this year to a senior attending high school in Montrose or Delta County or to a resident of those counties who was attended the county high school within the last 24 months. The scholarship may be used at an accredited school of the applicant's choice and is renewable for three years of undergraduate study following the initial award year. Applications are available at the guidance offices of Montrose, Olathe, Nucla, Delta, Paonia, Cedaredge and Hotchkiss high schools. Applications must include transcript, essays, resume and recommendation letters. Check with the guidance offices for application deadlines.

Moms In Touch groups meet

MONTROSE — Moms In Touch International is a Christ-centered, interdenominational prayer ministry that helps mothers, grandmothers and other concerned women gather for one hour weekly to pray for their children and the schools they attend. DMEA Scholarships available

DELTA — Delta-Montrose Electrical Association is providing four $250 scholarships for enrollment into full-time programs to the Delta-Montrose Technical College in Delta. The scholarships can be used for tuition costs in several career programs. For more information call 874-6548.

Technical College has New Student scholarship

DELTA — The Delta-Montrose Technical College is offering a special scholarship for residents of Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Ouray and San Miguel counties. For first-time students who qualify, up to one-third of tuition costs can be coved by the "New Student" scholarship for the following programs: business technology, which includes office administration, accounting technician, administrative assistant and medical administrative assistant; diesel mechanics; technical drafting and AutoCAD; cosmetology; and landscape professional.

The scholarship is available to all residents who enroll full-time in these specific degree programs. To apply call DMTC at 874-6548.

Kinship Connection for Kids

MONTROSE — Midwestern Colorado Mental Health Center has a support group for grandparents and other relatives who care for children. The groups meets the first and third Thursday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. downstairs at the United Methodist Church on 19 South Park in Montrose. The group gives participants support, education and information, a safe place to share feelings, access to resources and current parenting information and education.
