    UMC presents free concert

    5K run at Centennial

    MONTROSE — Centennial Middle School is hosting a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and 5K race on May 18 and 19. The spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be held at the school’s cafeteria on Friday, May 18 starting at 5 p.m.; silent auction tables close at 7 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and $3.50 for students.

    The 5K run/walk will be held Saturday, May 19, starting at the Centennial Track at 8:30 a.m. Race day registration and packet pick-up will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 8 a.m. The first 150 students and 150 adults to register will receive a free “Braves Run” t-shirt. Race divisions include: elementary students; six-, seven-, and eighth-grade students; high school students; 19-29 years; 30-39 years; 40-49 years; and 50 and older.

    Summer speech and language clinic

    MONTROSE — The Speech-Language Clinic at Montrose Memorial Hospital is offering a program this summer for children who are currently in speech-language therapy in the schools or are in need of speech-language intervention for the summer months. The program is designed as a small group program, and children will be grouped according to developmental age and area of therapy emphasis.     MONTROSE — A benefit fund for the E.J. and Melissa Trujillo family has been set up at both Montrose Bank locations. The fund will help with a variety of expenses for their 8-year-old son who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma.

    Wellness screening

    MONTROSE — Montrose County Department of Health and Human Services is offering a wellness screening from 9 to 11 a.m. every Thursday until May 17 at the Montrose Athletic Club. The health screening, which takes about 20 minutes to complete, includes nine tests for $30 per participant. Participants do not need to fast prior to the test. For more information, call 252-5012.

    Citizens committee new meeting time

    City mailing water consumer confidence reports

    MONTROSE — The city of Montrose will be mailing copies of a new consumer confidence report concerning the community water systems served by Project 7 Water Authority.

    The city began mailing the reports to residents Wednesday. The report covers the data collected in 2006. Residents are encouraged to review this information and contact their water provider or Project 7 with any questions.

    Copies of this information will also be available at City Hall or appropriate water providers after May 1. Questions may be directed to water providers or to Project 7 at 249-5935.

    An annual water quality consumer confidence report is required under 1996 Congressional amendments to the Safe Water Drinking Act. A community water system is defined as a system that has at least 15 service connections serving year-round residents. Typically, these systems include municipalities, homeowners associations, districts and other such organizations.

    The reports include information on source water, the levels of any detected contaminants and compliance with drinking rules, plus certain educational materials.

    Free baby items

    MONTROSE — Life Choices Pregnancy Center is offering the “Earn While You Learn” program. A mother or mother-to-be can enroll and earn all the baby items she needs for her baby up to a year old. The client will be paired with a mommy mentor and agree to take prenatal, parenting, life skills, and/or relationship classes to earn free mommy money. The mommy money is spent in the center’s baby boutique, which is stocked with baby needs including maternity clothes.     Montrose unveils public art exhibit

    MONTROSE — The City of Montrose, along with the Montrose Chamber of Commerce Public Art eXperience (PAX) committee, is now displaying eight bronze sculptures by artist Robert J. Wick of Arizona.     Memorial fund set up

    OURAY — A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Ouray residents Addie Sim and Ramona Radcliff. Sim served as Ouray County Clerk from 1963 to 1994. She passed away Jan. 18, 2007. Radcliff served as Ouray County Treasurer from 1965 to the end of 2006. She passed away Feb. 23, 2007. Donations will be used to purchase a bench to be placed outside the Ouray County Courthouse. If enough funds are raised, plans are to purchase trees to be planted behind the bench.     Non-profit needs community’s support

    OLATHE — Dream Catcher Therapy, a non-profit organization, opened it doors as a equine rescue and sanctuary called End of the Trail.     Donate to Pet Overpopulation Fund

    MONTROSE — The Pet Overpopulation Fund, which helps furnish grants to veterinarians and animal care and control agencies to subsidize spay/neuter programs, is asking taxpayers to donate to the cause.

    Donations can be made by checking off line 38 of the state income tax form and indicating the amount of the donation. The state will forward the designated amount to the fund and all donations are used to the benefit of cats and dogs. Locally, the Montrose Animal Protection Agency recieved a $15,000 grant from 2005 donations.

    Flamingo flocking fund-raiser

    MONTROSE — The Montrose High School ASTRA Club is once again accepting orders for flamingo flockings. “Flamingos for Friends and Foes.” The 3-foot-tall yard flamingos can be rented from 20 to 100 birds per order; cost is $1 per bird. A neck tag explains who the birds are from and the occasion. Funds raised this year will go toward several local projects and helping youth in Uganda.     Fund for help Blas Family

    MONTROSE — A medical benefit fund has been set up to help the family of Ubaldo Blas. Blas, 32, is a Montrose resident with two kids who recently was diagnosed with Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy in Denver.     Public Lands Center seeking volunteers

    MONTROSE — The Montrose Public Lands Center is looking for volunteers to be part of the visitor information team. The center is looking for people who like working with the public and are knowledgeable and passionate about the Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service and National Park Service lands in the area. Volunteers will greet visitors to the center, answer recreation and land use questions, answer the telephone and perform other general light office work. Training and a uniform will be provided.     Seedling tree program

    MONTROSE — Seedling trees are now available to order through the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and Colorado State Forest Service Conservation Tree Program. To qualify you must own at least two acres of land. Trees must be planted for the purpose of creating windbreaks, wildlife habitat, erosion control, etc.; they many not be used for ornamental or landscaping plantings or sold as live trees.     UVLA continues tradition of legal service

    MONTROSE — Uncompahgre Volunteer Legal Aid (UVLA) provides low-income residents of Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel counties and elderly residents of Montrose, Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Ouray and San Miguel counties with legal assistance. The UVLA office, located at 307 Main St., Montrose, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, however messages are checked on a daily basis.     VCB announces changes to funding policy

    MONTROSE — The Board of Directors of the Montrose Visitors & Convention Bureau recently approved a change to the funding policy pertaining to special events. In recent years, applications for promotional funds have been accepted for review on a monthly basis, beginning January 2007, however, requests will be reviewed on a quarterly basis. Applications for funding must be submitted for review by the VCB Board no less than 120 days prior to the date of the actual event. Early application is appreciated; however, review of applications will take place no more than 180 days prior to the event.     New policy from state Dept. of Revenue

    MONTROSE — Effective July 1, 2006 Montrose County Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be implementing a new policy from the Colorado State Department of Revenue. This policy requires all motor vehicle transactions to be accompanied by any form of secure and verifiable identification. The following is a list of transactions that will require your identification:

  • New titles

  • Duplicate titles

  • New registrations

  • New temporary registration permits

  • New placards

    Also when someone other than a named owner chooses to complete a transaction for the named owner, the named owner will be required to provide a non-secure power of attorney naming the agent. All dealers are required to include a readable photocopy of the SVI to complete title transactions.     Meals on Wheels volunteers needed

    MONTROSE — Volunteer drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels Program in the Montrose area. There are between 80 to 85 meals delivered to the homebound Monday through Friday from the Montrose Pavilion Senior Center, on six different routes. The meals are picked up at 11 a.m. at the senior center. Each route takes from 45 minutes to one hour to deliver. Volunteers usually sign up for one week at a time.     MONTROSE — The Colorado Quitline, a free telephone service that helps callers quit smoking and using tobacco, has announced that it is now offering free nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches to anyone who enrolls in the cessation program.     Task force targets pedestrian safety

    MONTROSE — The Traffic Issues Task Force, a group commissioned by the City of Montrose to examine current and future issues within the city, has targeted pedestrian safety as one of its top priorities. An educational pamphlet containing “rules of the road” and safety tips for pedestrians and motorists has been prepared for distribution to the public. The Montrose Police Department and Montrose Fire Protection District personnel will be working cooperatively to distribute the pamphlet to pedestrians and motorists on the street.
