Several years ago, treasurer of HMD Priscilla Fry decided Montrose needed an attraction to “trap tourists” when they came to visit other attractions such as the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It was then she started looking into the idea of a carousel.
She has now taken the project under her wing and is the president of Montrose Carousel, which is in the process of obtaining its 501(c)3, a nonprofit status.
“The board is in the process of determining what kind of carousel we’ll go with,” Fry said Friday at the unveiling.
The board is looking for an old antique carousel which she said would draw more people and also open up more grant opportunities.
At the unveiling, community members gathered for a champagne toast and to follow the project’s progress.
“It’s exciting to see this part of town get attention,” Montrose city council member Noelle Hagen said. “It’s important for a town to always have an eye on the old part of town — this project can hopefully do that.”
Fry chose the location, which is owned by Turn of the Century owner Dennis Schultz, because it is within walking distance of town and the historical museum.
Schultz is leasing the property to the organization for 50 years and doesn’t expect payment until the carousel is up and running.
“It seems to be moving along just fine,” board member and architect Phil Motley said about the project. He said he’s designed the shell and grounds for the carousel, but the board is still looking for the funds.
Fry said the board is creating a “dues” structure where families and individuals can be supporters of the project.
“Who doesn’t love a carousel?” Hagen said. “It reflects one thing I love about Montrose. People get these great ideas and people work to make it happen.”
