Publisher’s Notebook
Damn. The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album is 40?

Of birthdays……
One of the best publishers - and editors - I know, David Mullings, is down the road a bit in Ouray. His Ouray Plaindealer is celebrating its 130-year anniversary.
The Plaindealer took a 30-year hiatus — I’m thinking some readers hereabouts wish the same for the Notebook - reconstituting itself in May, 1969, by Joyce Jorgensen. Jorgensen died earlier this year. David bought both the Plaindealer and the Ridgway Sun 11-plus years ago.
It’s a newsy newspaper, and one can tell by reading David’s popular column he’s fully engaged in Ouray County. (Full disclosure; yes, he is one of our printing customers.) David’s from Raton, N.M., and was its community newspaper publisher for a time.
He says in his latest dispatch that it’s an honor and privilege to publish a community newspaper so vital to its readership. I concur, and recommend a subscription, 325-4412.
The Daily Press turned 125 late last month. Ever-changing with its readership and market, the Press converts to morning delivery and adds a Saturday edition come June 23.
Sign in Teton Steakhouse, in Jackson, Wyo: Cows In Wyoming Outnumber People Five To One. (Come in and even the score.)
One more example of how willing the Notebook, and the Daily Press are to correct factual errors.
Monday’s Notebook denoted how Susan and I were married in 1979, and honeymooned in Jackson, Wyo.
It was 1978.
Oops.
Two more Montrose High School success stories……..
Celia Hagan, daughter of Noelle and Richard Hagan, and Lindsey Fishering, daughter of Nancy and John Fishering, recently became associated with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle.
Celia is a graduate of Whitman College, in Walla Walla, WA., with a degree in biophysics/biochemistery/molecular biology; Lindsey’s degree from the U. of Colorado is in medical anthropology.
“The Hutch” is one of the top cancer hospitals and research facilities in the country, with five Nobel Prize winners working there. It’s named after Fred Hutchinson, a former baseball player and manager (Cincinnati Reds) whose brother was a physician. The hospital/research center has pioneered a number of treatments regarding bone marrow and stem cell transplants.
It’s also associated with the U. of Washington/Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The Notebook was patient at The Hutch for five months in 2003, including 38 days as a “guest” in its stem cell transplant unit. (If it hadn’t been for the “honor” of it all, I would’ve just as soon taken a pass.)
I see by the paper…..
The Denver Post’s “Colorado” section, where it recommends the sights and sounds of the state, had an item about a Montrose business, Gigi Ann’s Gourmet Seasonings.
It featured a ditty about Gigi Ann’s dips, soup mixes, and other goodies, including a photo of the Bringin’ Home the Bacon Dip.
‘Course, most of us “locals” hereabouts know of Gigi Ann’s, 309 E. Main.
Fish tale from the good folks over at the Gunnison Country Times…..
Don Walker of Florence landed a 50 pound, 3-ounce lake (mackinaw) trout on May 23 at Blue Mesa, a new state record. Here’s the kicker: the old record, about 3.5 pounds less, was held by his brother-in-law who has fished with him 40-plus years on Blue Mesa.
“Okay, okay,” actor Alan Alda recently told graduates at the Southampton College commencement. “Here’s one thing. This is very important. Number one, be very, very lucky.”
