MONTROSE — The Public Lands Partnership will meet next week to discuss the eventual outcome of the Dominguez and Escalante Canyons. The public forum will be in combination with Mesa State College professor John Redifer and the Natural Resource and Land Use Policy Institute.

The Dominguez and Escalante Canyons are located on the Uncompahgre Plateau, and are currently part of a Wilderness Study Area. The canyons are in the process of becoming full-fledged wilderness areas, Public Lands Partnership Coordinator Pam Motley said.

Dominguez and Escalante are considered suitable wilderness areas based on their characteristics, scenery, geological features, ecological diversity and archaeological and paleontological resources.

The public meeting, which will be held Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Grand Junction City Hall, is intended to break people into focus groups and then set up separate meeting times from there.

The Public Lands Partnership also held a clean-up workday at the Columbine campground in the Uncompahgre National Forest, similar to the volunteer workday at Iron Springs campground on June 2. Volunteers from the Public Lands Partnership, the Forest Service, and several other organizations joined forces to restore the campground by painting and refinishing picnic tables, cleaning fire pits and bathrooms, and rebuilding kiosks and fences.

More than 100 campgrounds in the Gunnison, Uncompahgre and Grand Mesa National Forests were going to be shut down by the Forest Service. The workday was intended to renovate the campground in order to keep it open for public use.
