The Notebook’s been e-mailing back and forth with Lee Renfrow, who’s getting the word out about next month’s Crested Butte Wildflower Festival.

In the latest dispatch, Lee says that if you’re planning an overnight trip in CB, it’s best to call now for lodging. The CB Chamber may be able to help, 349-6438. These rooms go fast.

Of course, we’re fortunate. We live here, and it’s only a 92-mile drive.

Included in the July 9-15 festivities are 4x4 tours, wagon rides, gardening events, cycling tours and so forth. And there’s an overnight hike from CB to Aspen.

In its wisdom, the state legislature in 1989 designed Crested Butte the “wildflower capital of Colorado.” Apt, yes.

  • Last night, we had a “dry run,” so to speak, for the Daily Press’ conversion from afternoon to morning delivery. What this meant is that the news was edited, and presented yesterday afternoon and evening.

    It’s a significant move when a newspaper converts from PM to AM delivery, and we’re “prepping” all this week to get ready for the official launch, which will be with our new Saturday morning edition (Friday night.)

    Too, the Daily Press has many commercial printing customers - newspapers from seven western slope counties. We’ve had to work with those publishers as well, in order to coordinate new press times.

    Later in the week, I’ll discuss the reasons behind the conversions, and talk about new staff members who are making it come together.

  • The Chung Yo department store in Taichung City, Taiwan, has what is being called the “world greatest men’s restroom.” There are expensively tiled (and almost private) urinals, and they come with a Heineken-stocked bar.

  • It’s National Caregivers Week, June 14-21, with recognition from the Homestead of Montrose/Volunteers of America. A good many people provide supportive and caring services to those who are ill in our greater Montrose/Olathe area. Info: 252-9359.

  • Baseball trivia answer…..

    The U. of California swept Yale in a best-of-three series in 1947.

    The stars of those two teams:

  • From California: Jackie Jensen, who went on to become the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 1958 for the Boston Red Sox, an outfielder who played alongside Ted Williams. Jensen retired in 1961, and is sadly often more remembered for his famous fear of flying than his athleticism. He was a two-sport All-American for the Bears, also excelling in football, and was a starting pitcher for his baseball team.

  • From Yale: George Herbert Walker Bush, who became the 41st president and kept his first baseman’s mitt in his Oval Office desk. Bush went 0-for-7 in the series, but was regarded as a pretty good hitter, and a much better defensive first sacker. The ’47 World Series ended with a rare triple play, with Bush on deck.

    The 1947 College World Series was held in Kalamazoo, Mich. Nowadays, it’s a big deal in Omaha. The former president, now 83, is featured in a oft-published photograph of him accepting a trophy from Babe Ruth.
