Two rear seat passengers were killed in the accident after being thrown from the vehicle. Jude Jaramillo, 15, of Arroyo-Hondo, N.M., was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. P.J. Valdez, 14, of Taos, N.M., was rushed to Delta County Memorial Hospital, where he died of multiple injuries.

Neither Valdez nor Jaramillo were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Mondragon and Armijo were wearing seatbelts.

Valdez and Jaramillo were members of the Taos High School football team. Armijo is also a member of the football team, and Mondragon is the assistant football coach.

The group was returning from a football camp in Oregon, according to The Taos News, in Taos, N.M.

The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m., in the eastbound lanes of the highway, when the driver lost control of the SUV after going through two dips in the highway. Colorado State Patrol officers said Armijo was driving 85 mph in a 65 mph zone.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the vehicle traveled 126 feet before skidding 29.8 feet and partially traveling onto the center median. The vehicle then continued to skid eastbound for 118.8 feet while rotating a quarter clockwise before reentering the roadway and skidding 24.8 feet.

The Kia then rolled three and a half times, traveling 354.1 feet across both eastbound traffic lanes and an eastbound merge lane.

The SUV came to a final rest on its top, facing south, on the eastbound shoulder of the roadway.

Alcohol and drug use are not suspected.
