MONTROSE — The Colorado Pro Rodeo Association kicked off the first day of the Montrose County Rodeo Friday night at Montrose County fairgrounds.

In front of roughly 300 people, 50 male and female riders competed in a variety of events, including steer wrestling, tie-down roping, and of course, bull riding.

The night opened with bareback riding, with featured riders from Colorado, Missouri and Arizona. Larry Carter of Ellsinore, Mo., walked away with a win after scoring 82.

In his first time competing in a CPRA event, Carter said he was impressed with Montrose’s rodeo and plans to return for a few more in the future.

“It’s a good one,” he said. “Just hanging out and meeting new people is what I like. You don’t get to see different riders when all you do is compete in one place. It was good to get out there today.”

The rodeo continues today at 11 a.m. with the CPRA Slack, which is free to the public. The second day of the rodeo will follow at 7:30 p.m.

For the riders, they’re planning on today’s action to be just as good.

“I had a pretty good ride today,” said bareback rider J.T. Cox of Chandler, Ariz.

“It’s a real nice setup here. It’s a lot better than riding in Arizona.”
