Margaret was one of eight children born to Margaret White Brock and Joseph Brock who came to the Montrose area first from England and then Kansas. Margaret started school at the tender age of 4 and rode horseback to grade school in Colona. She graduated from Montrose High School in 1929 and attended college briefly at Western State College.
She married Desler H. Linscott on Sept. 27, 1937, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They had four children: Ruth, Howard, Ruby and Peggy. She was a charter member of the Uncompahgre Helping Hand Club, was on the Cradle Roll of the Methodist Church and belonged to the Columbine and Happy Hour clubs. She was an active member and officer of the Spring Creek and Riverside Granges and Maple Grove and Riverside Parent Teacher Clubs. She was a member of the Montrose Christian Church and continued attendance on a regular basis until she was disabled at 91 years of age.
During her marriage, she worked alongside her husband every step of the way--farming, irrigating, raising sheep, feeding bum lambs, putting up hay and gardening. Margaret was active in 4-H from childhood and won a trip to the State Fair with her wonderful canning project. She and her husband each served on the Fair Board several years. She and Desler were 4-H leaders in the Maple Grove and Riverside communities, helping many boys and girls with livestock, gardening and cooking projects. She was proud to be selected as Outstanding 4-H Leader in 1954. She ingrained a love of reading and the out-of-doors in each of her children and a love of music. She sang often and played the piano.
She was independent and cared for her home and yard by herself. She continued to mow her own lawn and do yard work until age 91.
Although her "career" as a teacher was cut short in her early college years, nevertheless Margaret taught as a substitute teacher in the area schools her entire life. For years she would meet kids on the street who she had taught in one of the Montrose County schools and fondly remembered Mrs. Linscott. She encouraged learning in the days before computers and television. Each of her four children started school with reading and writing fundamentals, and she was always available with help and encouragement.
Margaret was a flower person for all of her life, a person with a true "green thumb." She could get flowers to grow and bloom in any kind of soil. Her yard had blossoms from early spring until late fall. Her tulip beds were wonderful. She assisted with the flower booth at the County Fair for many years.
Her sense of humor was always there. She loved the various humor columns in the local newspapers and would send items to friends and relatives.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Desler, in August of 1989; a son-in-law, Harold Hoeppner; her parents and all of her seven siblings. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Ruth (Jim) Burlison of Olathe and daughters, Terri and Jamie, Howard (Jeralyn) Linscott of Ridgway and daughters, D'Ann, Suzan and Sherry, Ruby Hoeppner of Arvada and daughters, Christine, Cynthia and Cheryl, and Peggy (Gerald) Hoeppner of Salt Lake City and daughter, Megan and sons, Jeffrey and Curt. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held at Valley Lawn Cemetery, south of Montrose.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home and Crematory, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-2121.
