Rogers successfully defends golf title

MONTROSE — Defending champion Jonathan Rogers used three birdies on the back nine of The Links at Cobble Creek to win his second straight Montrose City/Open Championship Sunday. Rogers was under par each day, shooting a two-under 68 Saturday at the Black Canyon Golf Club, then a one-under 71 at Cobble for a two-day total of 139, a five-shot win over runner-up John Ray.

Rogers, a Ridgway educator, went out Sunday on the front nine with a one-over 37, but had three birdies on the back, at holes 11, 14 and 18 for the three-under par two-day tournament victory. Rogers also won in 2006.

Ray shot an even-par 70 Saturday at Black Canyon, and a two-over 74 Sunday for second place. Jack McKenna, a multi-winner of the club championship at Black Canyon over the years, shot 74-78 for third place, as did Terry Heinz for a 152 total. David Woodruff was a shot behind at 153.

Dennis Bailey won the first flight, with a 79 Sunday, bettering his Saturday by two shots, for a 160 total. Tim Gilliland was second with a 164, with Jay Maguire third at 165. John Perpar was fourth with a 166 score.

Tony Lobato and Darrin Schoonover each shot 167 to post the low scores in the second flight. Bill Lords was third with 170 and John Fitzmaurice was fourth with 172.

Tom Smidt won the third flight with a score of 195, two shots ahead of Harry Taylor (197) and Ron Ringo (199). R.H. Linkletter was fourth with a 200 total.

Denise Davids won the ladies flight with a 184 total. Janet Maguire (219) was second, with Martha Dusio (228), third.

In the net score division, Rogers had the low number with his 139 total. Heinz was second (142) with McKenna, Bob Campiglia and Ray third with 144 totals.

Bailey and Maguire shared first flight net victories with a 140 total. Gilliland was third with 146.

Schoonover posted the low net score for the second flight, 138, a shot head of Fitzmaurice, 139. Lobato and Lords were third with 140 net scores.

Smidt posted the low net score of 148 for the third flight, four shots ahead of Schoonover and five ahead of Linkletter.

Martha Dusio had the low net score for the ladies division with a 143, one shot ahead of Ms. Maguire.
