Hazel E. McCall March 31, 1921 — Oct. 14, 2007 Age 86 MONTROSE — Hazel was born on March 31, 1921 at Norwood, Colo. to Charles E. and Nettie Mae (Ball) Hawkes. She graduated from Norwood High School in May of 1939. After graduation from high school she attended nurses training at Presbyterian School of Nursing in Denver and became a registered nurse in 1944. Hazel was a 2nd Lt. in the Army Nurse Corp during World War II and completed her training at Camp Carson, Colo. On October 2, 1947 Hazel married the love of her life, Alvin R. McCall, in Yuma, Ariz.; they shared 45 years together. Alvin preceded her in death on March 29, 1993. Hazel worked as a registered nurse while raising her children. She was the office nurse at the clinic in Norwood until 1960, a school nurse at the rural country schools in Montrose County 1960-1965 and a public health nurse in Grand Junction, Colo. from 1965-1972. She returned to Montrose with Alvin in 1972 and worked at Valley Manor until her retirement after 45 years of nursing. Hazel enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with her family, she enjoyed hiking, working in her flower garden and watching the many birds at her bird feeders. But most of all she liked to spend time with her family and adored her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; her parents; one brother, Chester (Buck) Hawkes; one infant brother; a grandson, Marc Nelson; and one granddaughter, Brittany McCall. She is survived by her three children: Chuck and wife Liz McCall of Cheyenne, Wyo., Linda and husband John Nelson of Gunnison, Colo. and Patty and her husband Kenny Davis of Eckert, Colo.; eight grandkids and eight great-grandkids; one brother, Leonard Hawkes and wife Susie of Gladstone, Ill.; numerous nieces and nephews; and one cousin, Barbara McCarthy of Santa Rosa, Calif. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 19, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Norwood Cemetery in Norwood, Colo.
