GRAND JUNCTION — On Sunday, Nov. 4 at 4:26 p.m., Richard Stanislaus Kowalski passed away peacefully in his home in Grand Junction, Colo. with his wife Judy at his side. Richard was born June 14, 1934 in Bronx, N.Y. to Roman and Irene (Clavin) Kowalski. Richard lived many lives during his time on earth. He was orphaned in New York City at the age of 9, setting out on adventures early in life. He sailed the high seas as a Merchant Marine, lived as a horseman and rode the ranges of California, and worked as a master mechanic for 40 years. He moved to Colorado in 1976 to ride our deserts and mountains. His passion for music spanned his entire life. Richard was a jazz and classical music enthusiast. He was a talented dancer and played the piano; and was a volunteer programmer for a big band show, called “Let’s Dance” on KAFM Community Radio, for the last 8 years. Richard was a consummate gentleman, who lived his life with incredible strength and courage. He was a gentle maverick, with a keen sense of humor, who cared deeply for others.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother and one sister, Dorothy Panza. Words cannot express our gratitude to caretakers, family, and friends for all the respect and kindness shown to him. Richard will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. A celebration of this extraordinary man will be held on Friday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Grand View Cemetery in Montrose. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to KAFM Community Radio, The American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Grand Valley.
