Valinda was born Feb. 10, 1958 in Montrose, Colo. to Thomas and Betty (Sackrider) McCombs. It was here in Montrose that Valinda enjoyed her childhood and schooling, eventually graduating from Montrose High School. Following high school, Valinda went on to Mesa State College in Grand Junction, where she was an excellent student in the college’s nursing program. Unfortunately, she suffered a knee injury that derailed her studies and she was unable to finish due to surgery.
Valinda married Ron Beck. While their marriage later ended in divorce, the couple had two children: Amanda and Thomas. Valinda was a homemaker and caregiver to her children. Prior to that she had worked on an ambulance in Eagle County and also worked in a nursing home in Montrose. She had lived in Moab, Utah; Wolcott and Oak Creek, Colo.; and Montrose, Colo. At the time of her death, Valinda was living in Gypsum, Colo.
Valinda was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Montrose. She loved to help others whenever and however she could. Valinda was a fan of the mountains and loved to go camping, fishing, hunting and walking with her family. Her greatest passion was reserved for her family. When her daughter Amanda was serving duty in Iraq, Valinda became the primary caregiver for her granddaughter, Relena Mosley. Spending time with Relena was when Valinda was happiest; she made her smile and put a twinkle in her eye. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her, especially her loving family.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Valinda’s life include her mother, Betty JoAnn McCombs of Gypsum, Colo.; her children, Thomas and Amanda Beck; and granddaughter, Relena Mosley, all of Leadville, Colo.; and her brothers, Mike McCombs of Gypsum, and Terry McCombs of Hawaii.
She is preceded in death by her father, Thomas McCombs.
A funeral mass in honor of Valinda’s life will be officiated by Father Don Malin on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at 10 a.m. The viewing will take place prior to the service, starting at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow the service at the Valley Lawn Cemetery south of Montrose.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Valley Lawn Funeral Home, 505 S. 2nd St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-4400.
