OLATHE — Richard “Dick” Brown, age 77, of Olathe, Colo., passed away on Saturday evening, Jan. 12, 2008 at his home.  

The son of James D. and Gertrude E. (Torrey) Brown, Richard Torrey Brown was born Jan. 16, 1930 at Melrose Park, Ill. He attended Bishop’s Quarter Military School in Chicago, Stone School in Olathe, Colo. and graduated from Montrose High School in 1948. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry from Colorado State University, and a Master of Arts Degree and School Administration Certification from Western State College.

Dick and Evelyn Joan Wright were married on Dec. 15, 1951 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Fort Collins, Colo. They had the privilege of sharing 56 years of marriage.  

He served in the United States Air Force for four and a half years in pilot training and as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega at CSU as were his father and uncle before him, Masonic Lodge No. 157 in Olathe, Montrose Lodge No. 1053, BPOE Elks, Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Olathe and St. Stephens Reformed Episcopal Church in Montrose.  

In 1948, Dick was named the National 4-H Achievement winner with his sheep production project. He was the Stone Community 4-H Club leader and given the state 4-H Alumni Recognition Award in 1979. He will be remembered as well for his love and concern for children, family and his talent for woodcarving.  

His 30-year career in education in Montrose County School District Re-IJ includes teaching and administration at rural schools Menoken and Coal Creek, principal at Olathe Elementary School and Morgan Elementary in Montrose.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Olathe, Colo.; daughters: Barbara Brown of Palisade, Colo., and Susan Ubell and husband David of Olathe, Colo.; grandchildren: Jason Torrey Ubell of Olathe, Colo., Amy and Brett, both of Denver, Colo.; five great- grandchildren: Lily, Noah, Gracie, Alex and Issac; and half brothers, Ralph Brown and Michael Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents and half brother, Philip Brown.

A memorial service in honor of Dick will be held on Saturday morning, Jan. 19, 2008, at 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Sunnyside Road, Montrose with Reverend Jerry Kistler officiating.
