MONTROSE — Animal rights activists picketed in front of the Montrose County Justice Center this morning to protest the continued operation of Colorow Kennels in Olathe.

Colorow Kennels' owner has been cited for cruelty to animals-neglect/mistreat, concerning a Pomeranian found with an ulcerated eye last year. The facility was also found to be in violation of the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act, according to a report from the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

Citizens for Animal Welfare and Shelter of Paonia organized today's peaceful demonstration, which coordinators said was intended to highlight animal abuse and garner public support for the closure of alleged puppy mills.

The kennels' owner, Nita Smith, was originally slated to appear in court Tuesday, but her hearing was rescheduled to Jan. 29.
