HOTCHKISS — Considering the majority of the team was playing its first ever varsity tennis match, Montrose’s 6-1 win over Hotchkiss was pretty good to say the least.

The Lady Indians won two of the three singles matches and swept the four doubles matches to win their season opener on Thursday.

“It was pretty good for our first match,” MHS assistant coach Bruce Herr said.

“We did some good things and we saw what we need to work on. It’s nice to get the win, but we need to keep steadily improving because the competition is only going to get stiffer as we go along.”

The highlight of the day for Montrose was sophomore May May Vickers, who beat Hotchkiss’s Ashley Lamberg 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

What made the win so impressive was the fact that Vickers sprained her ankle the night before during practice.

With a heavy dose of tape, Vickers was able to overcome the injury and limited movement on the court and still get a convincing victory in roughly 45 minutes.

“May May did great,” Herr said. “To play with a sprained ankle in her first varsity match was really impressive.”

In fact, Vickers, Alexandra Darling, Dinara Batyrova, Lindsey Sinner, Autumn Haynes, Addie Eichhorn and Hannah Forsberg all made their varsity debuts on Thursday.

Darling and Shelby George defeated Breanna Duffy and Stephanie Bittell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Batyrova and Heather Krebs won their No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-3.

Sinner and Haynes beat Hadley Hanson and Jessanne Oliva at No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-1, and Eichhorn and Forsberg defeated Stacey Carr and Nicole Davis 6-3, 6-0.

Montrose’s Hanna Guether knocked off Chelsea Hudson 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Valerie Marullo just came up short for the Lady Indians at No. 2 singles, losing to Loy Cotton in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.

“Our kids showed some great attitudes and great hustle today,” Herr said. “We’re going to need to keep that up all season, but today was a good start.”

Montrose returns to the court on Saturday when it travels to take on Paonia at 11 a.m.
