Teacher accused of child abuse

DELTA — A 22-year-old Delta High School teacher was issued a summons alleging child abuse, the Delta Police Department said.

English teacher Brian Havel allegedly allowed other students to hit a 15-year-old boy as a form of discipline for the boy's tardiness to class.

Acting Police Chief Roger Christian said that according to reports, as many as 10 students hit or punched the boy, who was apparently uninjured.

The alleged incident occurred a few weeks ago; a summons on misdemeanor child abuse was issued to Havel Friday.

Delta School District spokesman John Jones said Havel is not working at the high school now. He could not comment on the incident because the district views it as a personnel matter.
