DELTA — Mittie Hays MacAdams of Delta, Colo. died April 19, 2008 at Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 79. Mittie was born the April 5, 1929, the sixth of nine children, to Oliver and Davie Hays. She graduated from Delta High School and attended Colorado State Teachers’ College in Greeley and later received her Master’s Degree in Elementary supervision from Western State College, Gunnison. She began teaching in Dove Creek and throughout her 34-year career taught in Eckert, Cedaredge and Delta schools spending the last five years as principal.  

Mittie married Jack MacAdams Dec. 26, 1956 in Delta, Colo. They resided in the Cedaredge area for over 50 years, moving to Crossroads in 2004.

Mittie enjoyed volunteer work, caring for her loving family members and was a member of charitable and philanthropic organizations such as: Order of Eastern Star, National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Education Association, Surface Creek Valley Historical Society, garden and book clubs, and was a member of the Cedaredge United Methodist Church for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Jack MacAdams: two stepsons, Gene and John MacAdams of Denver; two sisters, Margaret Klein of Sedalia, Mo., Wanda Hinton of Beaumont, Calif.; one brother, Willard Hays of Arvada, Colo.; five step-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Raymond, Gene and Hugh Hays; two sisters, Nancy Triplett and Louise Brewer; two nieces, Diane Reiber and Theresa Hicks; and two great- nephews, John Messenger and Trenton Quigley.

Mittie was loved and cherished by 19 nieces and nephews and 36 great nieces and nephews.  

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2008, at the Chapel of the Cross in Cedaredge.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Cedaredge United Methodist Church with Rev. Deb Edwards presiding. Interment will follow at the Cedaredge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship fund c/o Madelyn Lake, 1942 Boudreaux Court, Montrose, CO 81401.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
