Known for her sunny disposition, Jennie loved to read and play the piano. She also enjoyed bridge, which she played well into her nineties. Jennie was always very helpful in looking after the health of her aging parents and the needs of others in her own big family. She was a loving wife and generous mother to her two sons Hal and Tom and a devoted grandmother to Tommie, Tamara, Jocelyn and Beth-Ann. She leaves behind many great-grandchildren. Jennie was active in the Presbyterian Church and made numerous friends wherever she lived.
Jennie was born in Klamath Falls, Ore., July 24, 1910 to William A. and Edith May Delzell. Jennie was the fifth of eight children. She is survived by her brother Charles F. Delzell (Gena) of Santa Fe, N.M.
In 1924 Jennie’s family moved from Klamath Falls to Salem, Ore., where she finished high school. In 1927-28 she studied at Willamette University in Salem. She completed her B.A. in English literature and home economics at the University of Oregon in Eugene. She was a member of Delta Phi and Pi Beta Phi sororities, receiving an honorary plaque from the latter for being a member for 78 years. From 1931 until 1938 Jennie taught high school English and home economics in Waldport, Sheridan, and Klamath Falls, Ore.
On June 18, 1938, Jennie married Hal A. Savage in Medford, Ore. The newly-weds made their home initially in Los Angeles, where their first son, Harold D. Savage, was born. Subsequently they moved to Prescott then Phoenix, Ariz. where their son Thomas J. Savage was born. In Phoenix, Jennie’s husband went into the welding supply business and headed Savage Industries for many years. During the latter part of the 70’s Jennie handled accounting for the family business.
In 1982 Hal and Jennie moved to Montrose, Colo. to be near their son, Tom. Hal died there in 1984. In 2005 Jennie moved to Casa Grande, Ariz. with Tom and Joyce.
Friends and relatives are invited to a memorial service in Casa Grande on Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m., at the Community Center, 515 W. Casa Grande Lakes Blvd S., Casa Grande AZ 85222. Contact: (520)483-0517.
