MONTROSE — The Giant Ferris Wheel towered high in the air as carnival staff hurried around the wet fairgrounds Thursday in preparation for opening day. Although raindrops fell intermittently, they said weather isn’t likely to put a damper on the family fun.

The Montrose Lion’s Club Carnival, which is now in its ninth straight year, opened at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Montrose County Fairgrounds, said Brown’s Amusements general manager Chuck Myrick. The annual fundraising event continues through Mother’s Day on Sunday.

The carnival is the Lion’s Club’s major fundraiser of the year, said First Vice President John Fox. Last year the event brought in about $17,000.

“We depend on it to fund scholarships, camper-ships and things like that,” Fox said. The club’s funding also goes toward vision programs, which help those in need of eye operations.

Today and Saturday the Lion’s Club will host games, food and its famous cakewalk at Friendship Hall. Fox said the indoor events are sort of like a gallery of activities for small children.

This year’s carnival welcomes back a refurbished Gravitron ride, which spins people around and pushes them up the wall, Myrick said. The classic Ferris Wheel is also returning for the event, along with several new games.

Game operator John McArthur, who said he has a little more than 20 years of carnival experience, is spending his first year with Brown’s. Asked whether there are tricks to winning games, he quickly responded, “No. And they always ask me if it’s free. I tell them no.”

A $25 wristband buys all day-access, “which means you can just ride, ride, ride,” Myrick said. For those with a sweet tooth, the event will have a giant funnel cake wagon.

“This actually is one of their (Lion’s Club) better fundraisers, which is good because the community does support us really good out here,” he said. “The crowds are big, I know that, especially on Saturday.”
