MONTROSE — Step by step, county and state elections officials tested the accuracy of local voting equipment Thursday.

“Everything is tested and ballots are voted on every device,” John Gardner, of the Colorado Secretary of State’s office said, while staffers conducted trusted build testing on the county’s Hart InterCivic electronic voting equipment.

“It ensures the state and the county the equipment is working correctly and it provides a training opportunity to the county.”

The testing began earlier this week and was not expected to conclude until Friday, but with extra staff time, the procedures will be completed ahead of schedule, Montrose County Clerk and Recorder Fran Tipton Long said.

Though Montrose County’s 2006 election equipment woes landed it on the Secretary of State’s Watch List, the testing being done this week takes place in all 64 Colorado counties as part of state re-certification procedures required under court order.

Montrose County is also working to be removed from the Watch List, where it was placed after improperly programmed machines caused significant delays at the polls. Though the state found the election results themselves weren’t compromised, there were “violations of state laws” in terms of security.

The state has since praised Long, who was not in office in 2006, for taking corrective measures. This week, other SOS officials visited Montrose to conduct interviews and go over documentation Long hopes will lead to the county’s removal from the Watch List.

“We should get an answer, hopefully, by the end of next week,” Long said. “I felt very positive about the interview.”
