Changes necessary

Re: County addresses

We are aware that most people dislike change;  however, some changes are necessary to improve the safety of our community. Montrose County has collaborated with 911 since 2003 to ensure that addresses are correct and easily located by emergency services.  Daily Press readers may recall there was an incident in early 2007 where an ambulance could not locate an individual that required assistance because of an incorrect address.

We feel it is important to give some context to the process of changing an address. Until 2000, Montrose County solely relied on information provided by the applicant. At times the address provided was inaccurate due to many reasons. Some of the reasons include the applicant “making up” their own address, or applicants changing the access to their home, or some people just remembered their address incorrectly.

Since 2000, Montrose County’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) department has implemented a procedure that requires the collection of a global positioning system point and linear referencing in the software mapping system, ArcGIS, to calculate the address.  Then, the address is cross checked using geo-coding to ensure the calculation is accurate. As a back-up 911 Coordinator double checks the addresses. The GIS department works hard to make sure that the addresses issued are correct. It is continuously refining procedures to increase their accuracy and maintain comprehensive records.

The GIS department did send out seven address change letters this month. These letters were the culmination of several months of communication with each individual regarding their address change.

We recognize changing an address and notifying addressees is an inconvenience. However, having reliable addresses so emergency responders can quickly find their destination is surely worth the inconvenience.
