MONTROSE — Margaret L. Smith passed away Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Montrose Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. Margaret was born Jan. 24, 1926 in Jeelong, Australia. She spent her childhood and received her education in Australia. Margaret met her first husband, Leslie Phillips, and they were married in Australia. Leslie was a United States Marine so Margaret was able to move to the United States and become a U.S. citizen with her 18-month-old daughter. Leslie died of a sudden heart attack on Dec. 25, 1980 in Denver at the age of 58.

Margaret married Ralph Smith in 1981, and they have celebrated the last 27 years together. Margaret was a very nurturing mother and wife. She loved spending time with her daughter and family. She was always a happy and carefree individual who simply enjoyed helping others and was a nurse at heart to many. Margaret was a loving homemaker, wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed her home, and was so talented with her hands. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph of the family home; her daughter, Margi Cook and husband Chuck of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Leighton Driede of Australia; two granddaughters, Lesley and Danielle Cook of Mesa, Ariz. and great-granddaughter Paris; grandson, Barron Criswell and wife Pam and great-grandson, Tyler and great-granddaughter, Jessica and grandson, Fred Criswell; step-daughter, Melissa (Phil) Plumb of Montrose; two step-sons, Ronald Smith and Rod (Linda) Smith, all of Denver; step-grandchildren, Jeff Plumb, Lisa Stone, Susan Baker, Melissa Brown, Kelly Eckerdt and Ryan Smith; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; and older sister, Mona Rowell.

A memorial service in celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at 3 p.m., at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.
