The grants have been available since 2007 and several projects have started across the state.
In Dolores County, $100,000 assisted in purchasing and leasing land, storage and equipment to establish a biodiesel production facility in Dove Creek.
In La Plata County, the National Sorghum Producers are using a grant to research the potential of various sorghum forages as a source for biomass-to-ethanol conversion.
Colorado State University is using a grant to see if straight vegetable oil can substitute for on-farm diesel engines.
The funds are allocated in three categories: feasibility studies, project participation and research.
Feasibility studies may address areas including marketing, engineering or legal requirements, or management. There is a maximum allocation of $25,000 per project in this category, according to the CDA.
A maximum of $100,000 can be allocated for project participation in the form of a grant, loan, loan guarantee or equity interest. The money can help with the development of a project, given a feasibility study demonstrates likely success.
The board allocates up to $50,000 in grants for research of energy-related topics and issues, according to the department.
The application deadline is Sept. 17. Applicants are required to provide a matching contribution of at least 10 percent of the total project budget.
