Last week my family and I were traveling through Colorado. We made the unfortunate choice to stop and eat lunch at Jo Jo's Windmill restaurant. Although the food was great and the waitress was friendly (to our face), I was horrified as to what I overheard our waitress say behind our back as I was leaving the restaurant. Here is a run down of the events as they happened. First off as we came in the waitress seen that I had a small child (my 1 year old daughter) she did not offer us a high chair or booster seat, we had to ask for that. Then just as we sat down in our booth my daughter got sick and threw up all over. No one came over to offer to help clean the mess up; the waitress did come by our table and seen that she was throwing up. I took my daughter to the restroom to clean her up and when I came back my mom was cleaning up the mess with no help from the staff, she was simply given a rag and bucket of water. As we were leaving I apologized to the waitress for the mess my daughter had made to which she said “it was okay.” As my mom was paying I went to the restroom to change my clothes. As I was leaving the restaurant I over heard our waitress complaining about the mess we had made and the fact that we didn't leave a tip.... I'll omit the explicit language she used. I went outside and asked my mom if she had left a tip and she said no, because as far as being a good waitress she wasn't. So I went back inside and gave the waitress $5 and told her I hoped it covered our "mess" I then explained that my mom had been the one to clean up the mess to which she replied “oh well we cleaned up plenty.” I then told her she didn't have to be so rude and she said to me, “ You didn't have to be so rude and stiff me man! Tipping is appropriate!"
Okay the last I knew leaving a tip at a restaurant was at the discretion of the customer in appreciation of the service provided by the waitress. We did not feel our service deserved a tip, but apparently she thought she was owed one. I sincerely hope the attitude and customer service we received is not a reflection of the personality of your town.
