Montrose softball team sweeps doubleheader

DURANGO — The Lady Indians softball team took care of business in its double header against Durango on Friday. Montrose defeated Durango in the first game 4-1 and 11-7 in the second.

Montrose head softball coach Joe Bollinger said the Lady Indians showed much improvement.

“They did an outstanding job,” Bollinger said. “They just hit the ball well and fielded the ball well.”

Montrose had minimal errors throughout both games. In the first, Montrose only allowed Durango one run off two errors made. The Lady Indians’ Autumn Haynes threw a no hitter in the first game and Bollinger said it was impressive.

The second game only got better for Montrose. The Lady Indians’ Andrea Flowers hit a home run early on that brought in three more runs and sparked Montrose to score most of its 11 points early on.

Bollinger said the team had worked out most of the problems it faced in previous games, as the team hitting was more consistent throughout both games. He said double headers were hard on the team, because they spread their pitching thin as both varsity and junior varsity play at the same time.

The Lady Indians face off at 10 a.m. and noon today in Cortez and against Cortez in its second straight doubleheader. They will then battle it out a 4:30 p.m. against Grand Junction at home, before beginning the district tournament in Grand Junction
