CRAIG— Montrose took the team lead after the first day of Class 4A state boys golf tournament with 221 strokes.
But Highlands Ranch’s Valor Christian is not far behind. The high school, participating in the its first year of sanctioned golf under the Colorado High School Activities Association, is only two strokes behind the lead.

The Indians’ Justin Russell sat tied for second with Brenden Beeg of D’Evelyn, four shots off the pace.
Valor Christian’s Wyndham Clark is in first place in the individual results, shooting the lone sub par round of the day, a 4-under-par 66. Tournament favorite Nick Umholtz of Greeley Central is seven shots back.
Drew Trujillo shot a 74 for Montrose, tied with four others in sixth place. Teammate Branden Walters was three shots back with a 77 while Pat Young shot an 81.
Also of note, Delta’s Donny Stewart shot a 79 in the opening day of action.
The tournament resumes today.
