David White has prepared for the county commission as well as anyone we’ve seen, maybe better. Since relocating here nine years ago, White has become active in our community, including a stint on the Montrose city council, with part of that term as mayor. He’s been accessible to voters and potential constituents, has worked hard at campaigning and has the clarity and acuity to become a part of the county’s leadership.

He merits our endorsement for election to the county commission, District 3. Here’s why:

• Anyone who takes a look at a map or atlas knows Montrose County has a land mass that rivals a couple of U.S. states, even foreign republics. The county’s constituency spreads out to the West End, closer to Grand Junction than Montrose. White has worked earnestly to develop contacts there, has endeavored to make business and government relationships, and pledges he’ll keep regular office hours in the West End. We believe him. White is running against Tim Walsh of Paradox.

• Anyone who reviews the demographics of the county appreciates its diversity as well. It’s in the midst of an anniversary, 125 years of rich history as a county. Natives and newcomers call it home. There is a national park on one end; the development of possible uranium mining on the other. We believe has the capabilities and energy to represent this large district and county.

• Farming has been a traditional financial and cultural base, our access to water a coveted natural asset. Yet, today, there are also manufacturers here, from chocolate candies to high-tech products that are being used by the Department of Defense in the war on terror.  Montrose County is also home to government and their staffs — federal, state and local government employees.

• As a businessman and former elected official, we believe White has a grasp of these industries and government needs and how they connect to enrich a community. White was also a member of the city council in Colorado Springs (1989-1993). That may be a long time ago in politics, but you cannot discount that experience that begets the skills of compromise, or the contacts he’s made in Denver.

His experiences and perspectives — earned in street-corner campaigning and serving the public in a visible role — will provide Montrose County citizens with a commissioner they can count on in the future.
