Indians defeat Cañon City in playoff opener

MONTROSE — Wearing Mohawk-style haircuts, the 15th seeded Montrose Indians' defeated Cañon City 3-1 in the opening round of the Class 4-A state soccer playoffs here Wednesday.

Cañon City scored first and early, but it didn’t worry the Indians senior forward Steven Tobler. "We didn't sweat it, the goal came in the first five minutes and we knew there was still 75 minutes yet to play.” Tobler scored two goals in the game and had an assist.  The Indians controlled the tempo and dominated the first half of play.

Sixteen minutes into the game, Tobler put the Indians in the lead to stay with an assist by Eliseo Gomez giving the Indians a 2-1 lead. MHS had 14 shots on goal compared to Tigers’ nine. Gomez scored the third goal 61 minutes into the contest to ice the game.

The Indians, 12-4 on the season, will face either Fort Lupton or number two seed Fossil Ridge of Fort Collins Saturday with a venue and time to be announced.

"We wont do anything different to prepare for this game Saturday,"  said MHS coach Jim Lewis. "I expect us to play well.”
