These people cared enough to vote. Did you?

Today – in case you’ve missed it – is Election Day. The polls and pundits don’t matter anymore. All of those negative ads – broadcast, print, online – will disappear shortly. The decision is in the hands of the people.

We’ll quote from Ogden Nash (1902-1971), the great American poet.

Election Day Is a Holiday

“People on who I do not bother to dote

Are people who do not bother to vote.”

For some reason, many people – potential voters, indeed – don’t bother with this Constitutional privilege. Some don’t vote because of indifference. Others, contempt. Or as Mr. Nash, continues:

“They have such refined and delicate palates

That they discover no one worthy of their ballots.”

Of course, that’s rank nonsense. The nonvoters are the ones who let the rascals in and let the political discourse in this country, state and county sink into the mud. But as we know, it’s the non-voters who gripe the loudest about how the government works. They have a right to complain, but apparently no obligation to take part.

“Oh let us cover these clever people very conspicuously with loathing,

For they are un-citizens in citizens’ clothing.”
