Harold James Kolz

CANYON, Texas — Harold James Kolz, age 76, formerly of Montrose, Colo., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 at his home in Canyon. He was born to Henry Herman and Velma Faye (Dolan) Kolz on Dec. 28, 1931 in Allison, Colo.

He attended school in Allison and Montrose before serving his country in the Korean War. During his service with the Army in Korea, Harold was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery and Valor.

After being Honorably discharged from the Army, he returned to Montrose where he met and married Reva Rae Hockett on Aug. 12, 1955 at Montrose First Church of the Nazarene. Together they adopted and raised two children, a daughter named Nancy Louise and a son, Warren Ray. Harold and Reva enjoyed 36 years of marriage until she preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 1990. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ruth Kolz, and two brothers, Joe Kolz and Merle Kolz.

Harold spent most of his life working in different sawmills in the Montrose area. He also owned his own coal business in Olathe, Colo. for eight years. After selling the coal business, he returned to work at Blue Mesa Forrest Products, until he retired in 1996. Throughout his life, Harold enjoyed hunting, camping and spending time in the mountains. He and his wife were long time members of the Montrose First Church of the Nazarene. He spent the last five years of his life in Canyon, Texas where he could be near the joy of his life, his granddaughter, Chelsey Quiett. While here in Texas, he met Lucille Smyrl who was very dear and special to him; they spent many hours together over the last four years.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Quiett and husband, R.C. of Canyon, Texas; son, Warren Kolz and wife Erin of Lawrence, Kan.; granddaughter, Chelsey Quiett of Canyon, Texas; grandson, Scott Quiring of Overland Park, Kan.; sister, Berneeda Kolz of Montrose, Colo.; brother, Harvey Kolz of Montrose, Colo.; and uncle, Edgar Kolz and wife Maxine of Montrose, Colo.    

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008 at Brooks Chapel with Pastor Ron Sullivan, pastor of First Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Cremation arrangements by Brooks Funeral Directors.
