MONTROSE — Mallory Haulman, the Montrose High School student who was attacked Tuesday, is home from the hospital and recovering, the school district reported.

"We're delighted," Montrose County School District spokeswoman Linda Gann said.

Mallory, 17, sustained injuries to her neck after a 14-year-old boy allegedly assaulted her with a straight-edged weapon.

The boy has not been identified and formal charges haven't been filed. Police said they are requesting he be prosecuted for attempted first-degree murder.

Gann said the suspect was slated to be enrolled at a residential childcare facility Tuesday and had attended orientation Monday. The RCF is an intervention program to prevent expulsion.

"As we know, he did not (enroll). He came to us from outside this area," she said.

Gann said she could not disclose whether the boy was a disciplinary problem within the school district.

Gann also said the incident wasn't keeping many students out of class today — of the 1,400 member student body, only 17 students' parents called in to keep kids out of school because of it.

"Things are going remarkably well," she said. "I'm so proud of our students and our staff. School started without incident this morning. ... I think there as a sense we're all going to get through this together."

Gann, surveying lunchtime activities, said students appeared to be recovering from the shock. "There's footballs flying through the air. Kids are laughing. It's a sound that is very welcome."
