MONTROSE — Walter Irving Hance, age 91, died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, 2008 at Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose. Walter was born Sept. 27, 1917 to Walter Eugene and Bertha Mae (Sage) Hance in Nucla, Colo. Walter spent his childhood in Nucla and graduated from high school there. Walter was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Nucla. When Walter wasn’t busy farming, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Walter married Harriett (Burbridge) Deal in 1984 in Montrose. They made their home together in Montrose until Harriett passed away in 1990. He and Harriett enjoyed traveling in their camper. Following Harriett’s death, Walter spent time with his step-son hunting and fishing, often on the spur of the moment, and enjoying the outdoors.
Among Walter’s survivors are his brother, Stacy (Nancy) Hance of Winchester, Ore., and his step-son, Charles (Shirley) Deal of Eckert, Colo. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett; his parents; his brothers, George and Allan Hance; and two sisters, Anna and Mary.
A graveside service in honor and celebration of Walter’s life will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. in Nucla, Colo. at the Nucla Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled under the care and direction of Valley Lawn Funeral Home, 505 S. 2nd St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-4400.
