Indians hope for slam dunk this season

MONTROSE — Welcome back to the hardwood courts.

As the Indians prepare for the upcoming season, Montrose High boys basketball coach Dwight Rawlings isn’t sure what to expect – all that he knows is that his guys are dedicated and very young. This year’s Indian squad features only two seniors, Mac Alexander and Tim Koski.

“We’re working hard and I am pleased with the progress,” Rawlings said of the Indians in practice. “Being young, we’re going to get better as the season goes on.”

Montrose is also dealing with height issues, as they don’t have much with their tallest player at 6’5.” However, Rawlings said height is always something the Indians have had to deal with and will make the best of the situation by elevating in different aspects of the game.

“Our outside shooting is much stronger than in the past,” Rawlings said. “We also like to get out and run. But we’re most conscious about blocking, which is a must being short.”

The Indians placed fifth in the Southwestern League last year and went 13-11 for the season. This year, the team hopes to improve on that record with practice and in an upcoming tournament.

“We hope tournament play can prepare us for the league,” Rawlings said. “Every team is going to be a challenge; we’re just going to be ready to play.”
