MONTROSE — A Montrose High student arrested on suspicion of making bomb threats faces possible expulsion as well as a criminal complaint.

Montrose Police announced Thursday they had detained a 14-year-old boy in connection with Wednesday’s threat, which was found scrawled in the men’s bathroom.

The message referred to the presence of a bomb in the school and a time it would go off, Montrose Police Cmdr. Gene Lillard said.

Staff evacuated the school, suspending classes while officers searched for possible explosives. None were found, but the investigation led police to the teen. Lillard said he was not able to disclose those circumstances.

The young suspect was taken into custody on allegations of false reporting of explosives, a class-6 felony; interference with an educational institution, a class-1 misdemeanor and second-degree criminal tampering, a class-2 misdemeanor.

He was released to parental custody and the case was referred to the district attorney for formal charges, which have not yet been filed.

School district spokeswoman Linda Gann said on Thursday the school has begun procedures to suspend the child and, pending the outcome of the investigation, could recommend expulsion.
