MONTROSE — While the city of Montrose’s parks budget was cut back last year, it isn’t stopping Friends in Dog Ownership (FIDO) from trying to open a dog park in town.

“It’s a struggle because the city said it would help pay for, but it’s hard with the budget cuts. We are working with the city to develop the park by the most economical means possible,” Julie Williams, FIDO treasurer, said.

To open the dog park, FIDO will have to raise between $13,000 to $45,000 depending on how big the park would be and the type of fencing for it. Williams said those decisions wouldn’t be made until a public meeting was held and public input determines whether or not they would want a park and what type of fencing they would like it to have.

With tough economic times, the city is looking to make the park a mixed facility, with a fenced in dog park on one side and a children’s playground next to it.

While the public meeting has yet to take place, FIDO is still looking to raise money with a couple of different fundraisers. On Saturday, FIDO representatives worked at Hastings in the coffee shop from 10 a.m. to noon. All tips made during that time were donated to FIDO.

On May 16, FIDO will hold a garage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside of Murdoch’s, 2151 Townsend Ave. The community is encouraged to donate various items and can do so by dropping donations off at Eagle Storage between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 18, April 25 or May 2. You can also have your donations picked up by calling FIDO at 901-1603 or e-mailing FIDO at fido.montrose@gmail.com

Williams said FIDO was expecting to raise a decent amount of money at this year’s fundraiser, as last year’s garage sales raised $4,000.
